THey are self employed but get public funded pensions. Talk about having your cake and eating it. If I was trying to save money on public pensions, cutting that perk would be my first move.
You aren't taxed to pay into their pension funds like that. Tou are taxed to pay for the services you and the coutry needs; which requires paying the people who do it. And usually these days a job comes with a pension scheme.
I think one needs to realise not all in the public sector are highly overpaid managers and suchlike. Most of those in a union are paid relatively little, and worry about how they will cope on the pension when they no longer have a job.

I agree entirely, but that was the deal that the GP's and dentists did with the Labour government and a fantastic deal it was too......just as in 2006, the BMA was astonished at the Labour settlement of their pay giving them less money and less working hours.....nice work if you can get it.

Are the strikers trying to pressurise the government into backing down then? What`s the aim exactly? Maybe they`re trying to get the sympathy of those of us in the private sector who have to work for longer and pay more into our pensions to get the same benefits we had before our pension reforms. If that is the case they are barking up the wrong tree. Or maybe they`re trying to get the sympathy of minimum wage earners in this country who have no gold plated pension to make up for their meagre salaries. It`s 2011, the country can`t afford it and they need to get over it.
gromit, the Greek people according to a Greek business friend, are a conniving lot, who avoid paying tax at all cost, that includes corruption in politics, its one of the reasons when you go there, you will find buildings unfinished, if you put a roof on the building, then bang, taxable,
i had to get him to explain to me, a few times, as i am a bit slow like that... because the times i travelled across the place, wondered why there were all these half finished homes and hotels. They are so dependent on tourism that if that fell through the floor, then much of the place would turn up its toes. They joined the Euro, and that was one of the biggest mistakes of all.

25% - I'll repeat that - 25% of everybody's council tax payments go straight into the pension pot for public workers. Over 90% (if the figures are to be believed) of public sector workers are on final salary schemes.
Depressing statistics (unless you're a public sector worker).
What I struggle to understand is why am I required to provide a pension for a public sector worker? I think it is deeply unfair that I am having to fund my own retirement and somebody else's
