The Church now says that it will be okay to be a gay Bishop ...

... as long as you don't actually "do gay stuff".

So they are only allowed to be "gay" in their heads.

If you can be gay without actually doing gay things, then I am teetotal, and a vegetarian.

Is this another instance of the Church leaders having no grasp of reality?

One could be tempted to say that the very fact that they are Church leaders shows their tenuous grasp on reality, anyway.
There are plenty of gay people who have never had sex for one reason or another, just as there are many heterosexual virgins.

Do you assume celibate priests and nuns are asexual?

There are plenty of threads in "Religion & Spirituality" which agree with that proposition, JTH.

Aah, now that's a good point, hc.

But isn't that like my vegetarianism?

Is it fair to say that I'm not a vegetarian, just because I eat meat for one reason or another.

(Possible reasons no.1 ... I ordered the lamb chops)
That's what happens when an ancient institution like the Church of England is subject to anti-discrimination laws.
Question Author
What ... they try to twist those laws around, until they can avoid complying with them?
Well they believe in a fairy story so why do you think they should try to live any different.

On a serious note I suspect they mean dont be high profile or mince down the aisle.

Glad you brought this one up, because I honestly think that the CofE is doing its utmost to modernise, without alienating it's conservative wing, and this is literally the best they could come up with.

The Bible condemns homosexuality, and I believe it states that gays should be stoned (and not in the 'Pete Doherty/Amy Winehouse way').

This obviously doesn't fit in with who we are in the 21st century, but a neat 'get out clause' is for the church to say - "Okay, you're gay - you can be a bishop...but just don't do the sex stuff".

In that way, they're actually complying with the written word of the Lord, in that, the Bible doesn't say that you cannot be a man and fancy David Beckham, Tom Hardy or Jason Statham. It just says that if you do, and you sleep with them, then you're an abomination.

I think that you are talking about the fully grown and developed of the human species.

If they have NEVER had sex then how can they know whether they are homosexual or heterosexual?

This is for my own education.
Cliff Richard`s been saying that for years!
And mine squad.
Sexuality of whichever persuasion is about more than the sex-act, sqad.

You can tell at an early age exactly what is setting off your radar/gaydar........long before you actually get round to the 'business'.

David Beckham - horrendous voice ... I'd have to tape his mouth shut ... and then he wouldn't be much use

Tom Hardy - mmm, not sure ... he wrote Tess of the d'Urbervilles, right?

Jason Statham - ya, he's HOT !
I think you have it arse backwards JJ To be a veggie or a TT you need to refrain from something. You can't refrain from something in your head and yet still do it and claim to be TT or Veggie at the same time. Whereas you can be homosexual and not practice your preferred sexual practices.

It's the church's old viewpoint that it is the deed they find sinful rather than your desire, which it is assumed you have less control over.

Uh Sqad, I guess folk know their preferences before trying out the act.

Who said?....if i am male and fancy sex with a man.....I am homosexual.....if fancy sex with a woman then i am heterosexual.........on has to sample the goods before you decide.

So they say, but i wonder if their environmental factors, parents or friends or perhaps occupation or even "trends" have anything to contribute.?
If you won't accept my word on the matter what would suffice ?

At a young age, it really isn't about 'sex'.....

I knew at an early age that it was 'girls' for me. But I didn't have any idea what sex would or could be with a girl OR a boy.........and, I was 18 before I had the notion 'confirmed'.
I know someone who says he is gay, but thats because he can't get a girlfriend :o(
