I don't think the limit has changed, it always stopped somewhere around the length of ABerrant's soliloquy. It's just that it now tells you how much you've got left instead of stopping a post in mid-sentence.

Yep, it's always been 4000ish.

We're just hoping to stop users being frustrated that they've been cut off.

It's slightly different in IE8, you can go past the limit, but can't press the submit button.

We did it this way because of some of the inbuilt restrictions of IE.

In FF and chrome you'll just "bump" against the limit.
