I was listening to a discussion on the radio this morning concerning that woman who wants to bring her totally unskilled non English speaking husband
to this country, who she admits would have to live on benefits.
Her solicitor argued that a billion people in the world live on less than $2 a day and therefore they should have the right to live here if they want to. It is the moral and humane thing to do. Judging by many of the AB posts that view would also be supported.

DF so do i, but consider that Britain is in dire straits, already overburdened with people, many of whom have come to Britain illegally, so presumably contributing nothing by way of tax, NI, add in an overburdened NHS, schools, housing, and a country small enough to fit into US many times over, where there are 300 million or so souls, so our going on 70 million is a stretch too far. As to modellers argument that it is the humane thing to do, let yet another person be a burden on the state, one who has no ability to work, or intention, thus also paying nothing. Why do British people who have paid, contributed, get such short shrift, yet we can accommodate ever more from overseas.

I have to agree with em over this and what concerns me is what will come re lack of space. Only a few weeks ago I saw an item that the birth rate is this country is going up far more than was anticipated or thought of, so what on earth are we going to do for housing and all essential services when we become an overcrowded island that lots feel will happen in the not too distant future.

I am incensed that when family members who had struggled, worked hard all their lives and paid into the system, had to beg for scraps, to get help when it was really needed, when you see others, and British people alike, who have paid absolutely nothing get all the help there is.
This country is not a dumping ground for all the worlds ills, it cannot be,
that is an unfair expectation from people who think we should be continually putting our hands in our pockets.

It's curious how so many people whose ancestors managed to scramble into the lifeboat are now so keen to pull up the ladder and deny the same chance to others.
I'm sure Dolly didn't go to Australia out of a sense of altruism and a wish to selflessly serve the Australian people. She was an economic migrant and went for a better life.
People with a bit of initiative should be allowed the same chance.

That's fine sandy but as long as the country concerned wherever it is, has the space and resources, that surely has to be one of the main things in accepting immigrants anywhere isn't it?

sandyroe fine then how do we accommodate them, where do they live, work, and send their children if they have them to school. Do we concrete over Britain with housing, until we have no green space left, many parts of England already look like that, come on this is unfair to expect that we can have an open door policy, when do we say stop and no more.

The UK, along with other parts of Europe, has an aging population. If we don't allow these people in, who will pay the taxes that will help pay for our care in our old age?

I think em, with our low resources and space here it's already gone well past the point of saying "no more". IMO we should start from like yesterday and close the doors to save as much as we can for ALL of us to live in the future.

sandyroe, what happens if those incomers don't work, or indeed do, they send money home to their loved ones, then when the time is right
go home, leaving the country in a black hole of pension debt. That was the intention of many West Indians when they came to Britain back in 1950's, make enough money and go home to retire, some did, but many stayed, but who is say what will happen when the economies of these countries take a turn for the better, India and China are emerging economically, so we could still be in dire straits if those people decide they no longer want to reside in Britain.

With the rising birth rate here which will probably continue, there will be more than enough people to do everything here sandy, with so little space, overcrowding etc it can be likened to rats in a corner, something will have to give at some stage and I hope I won't be around when it does.

Isn't the recent rise in the birth rate down to the fact that the young people coming here are settling and having families? And isn't that what we need?
In some parts of Europe, Italy in particular, the population is actually declining.

But Sandy, how many people can you accommodate in a small space, I mean we're not America or Australia where they have more space than they need (it appears) and with a growing population here, together with piling more incomers there will be a limit beyond our capacity where we will be living in cramped space with not enough resources to go round.

There won't be a massive increase in our population. The people coming here will help maintain the levels and provide the services we need.
