It seems that 72 per cent supported the idea, and only 17 per cent were opposed to it.
Before any dismiss this out of hand, please just think about it.
/// Senior Tory MP Patrick Mercer said: “If you are in being taken to hospital in Germany, the likelihood is that you are being driven by a conscripted ambulance driver. There are all sorts of important ways that National Service could benefit society, while at the same time instilling some much-needed discipline into youngsters.” ///
I personally think that Patrick Mercer MP is talking so much sense, it need not be military service, it could cover many civilian positions.
The youth would be taken off the streets and away from their home environment, also away from any peer pressure they are likely to encounter from the gang culture that is so prevalent today.
Apart from those obvious advantages, they would experience discipline, and learn a skill at the same time.
Taking into account how much our broken society is costing us, the introduction of a type of national service would be self funding.

Helping out at play groups, nursing homes, planting community gardens, clearing areas, logging wild-life, driving hospital transport,
delivering prescriptions, helping those people who cannot cope with their homes or gardens. Not a slave labour force but an opportunity to give back to society for benefits received and perhaps to find a future in employment not before imagined. A three month period of trial? Six for the second?
Oh the cost! I hear you shout. There are many people who would be more than happy to take on trainees. Cost to the government? Job seeker's allowance + an incentive.

I can see your point barmaid, it would be difficult to start with and would require tweaking in areas, but at least it would be a start.
I am totally aware of the difficulties of gaining employment due to the fact I am searching myself, things being made harder for myself as I do not qualify for any state benefits due to my medical pension I get from the forces. Also firms do not want to take on someone who has an injury and is undergoing treatment as they will loose production/money.
If anyone can think of a better idea please feel free to step forward rather than doing the usual of shooting down others without having anything to offer in it's place. That sort of behaviour should be left to our MP's who seem to be highly trained in it.
I am currently researching how to become an MP as I feel the only way to get anything done is by attacking the system from the inside!!!!

I've not read the whole of this thread, but I know for a fact that Halifax son would HATE being made to do national service!
He is 14 and is at a state school - has already sat his GCSE Maths, aspires to go to University and wants to be a marine biologist. He spends his spare time playing his Xbox and watching the documentary channels. He beats me every week at University Challenge (I am a uni graduate).
Should he be made to do national service? Or should it be for those poor young lads who are brought up with parents who don't give a sheet?

then the ultimate puerile minds must rest with Brown and Darling - and that pudding who left the message as a joke that there was no money leftn the cupboard, especially after the final rampant overspend when the Labour party realised it was going down; they are the ones that left the UK in this dire financial situation and we now have to pay for their disgraceful action........how many years did the Labour party have to "sort out" British economy?
HH I sympathise for you....have you seen your local MP to see if he/she would sponsor you in front of some of their larger employers in your constituency, or indeed ones with whom they have close contacts.
I am supposing that you have a relevant and well put-together C.V? I am sure that they (and here) can help you if you feel you need some assistance....

DTCrosswordfan,
Blair and Brown spent £billions on new Schools and Hospitals. Then the bankers stole the next 30 years of money, and the British taypayer is paying for their greed and ineptitude. The Government cannot afford enough police to keep our streets safe, but the banks can still pay out mega bonuses. How so?

I lived in Germany for 28 years AOG and I can confirm that the young people do their National Service in areas that teach them respect and discipline and help their communities. Quite often the youngsters like the work so much that they chose to go into related work as a career with proper pay, after they have finished school or national service. It is not seen as a harship by youth in Germany, but as a responsibility and chance to experience work they may be interested in. A great system, in my view!
well lets remove the banks from the UK economy and see the effect...devastation I would think
Successive governments have been to lax on them, Gromit, especially the red rose lot - (13 years was it, on their watch was it?). Yes there has to be some reining in but it is a delicate balance in not wanting to destroy London as one of the major five or six centres, but ensuring we get due returns from them into the economy.
Look, I am not per se blaming the Labour party on this though it was on their watch. A lot of the investment products (derivs and the rest) have only come about by globalisation and the internet, where the thinnest of plays can be added up and hence make very significant plays.
That will take immense global leadership to being about and it will take more than DC, BO'B, AK, NS and the rest to bring about - though Lagarde could be a very important player in bringing this about.
Back to the thread and I believe there is need to fine a community programe that helps add some value to the social programme and support, not termed NHS but perhaps CS, not compulsory as why should HalifaxMum's offspring be exposed to such a programme if they are already "advancing"?
