News reports give much coverage to the uprising of the rebels in Libya and to violent repression of the people by the Gaddafi regime. Somewhere along the line the origins of the problem seem to have become obscure. What actually was it that people started rebelling against in the first place?

history is written by the victors
"history is written by the victors" - does that still hold true in these days of mass video-ing, picture taking and 24hr news channels?

Perhaps "history is written by the media moguls" has been more realistic for some time, although social networking might have made that obsolete already.
Perhaps now history is written by the video editors
Whoops sorry Kakural
The "victors" didn't invent 42 years of torture, repression, corruption and theft of national wealth and assets by a gangster, his family and their hangers-on.
Not much reason for a rebellion at all really :-)
the victors can now invent what they want and the media will print what they like
Dr Filth //the victors can now invent what they want and the media will print what they like //
That's right try justifying Gadaffi's 40 years of oppression
and support of terror. Just blame the media, apart that is from the Morning Star they are beyond reproach.

History usually IS written by the victors, and in some cases to the extent that what is written is a travesty of what actually occurred. I can think of one notable recent example. However making the observation in this instance, and suggesting some sort of Orwellian doctoring of the facts, about a conflict that has been in the world's spotlight for 24 hours a day for months seems somewhat fatuous.
In fact if anything it's the losers and their camp followers who have been making it up so far.
// Four months after the 1969 coup (when Gadaffi seized power) a group of army officers, led by Colonels Adam Hawaz and Musa Ahmed, attempted to take power away from Gadaffi. There is strong evidence which suggests that Gadaffi was tipped off about the coup attempt by Western intelligence agencies. John Cooley in his book Libyan Sandstorm, points the finger at the CIA. //

Ichkeria make a point of "42 years of torture, repression, corruption and theft of national wealth and assets by a gangster, his family and their hangers-on". That's the sort of answer I would be interested to know more about.
There are countless documented cases, many of them recorded by Amnesty and other groups.
The catalyst for the protests was undoubtedly similar protests in Tunisia and Egypt, to either side of Libya.
the same is happenoing in saudi and syria but they are on the queens christmas card list so we don't like to say to much

amnesty international on syria

So what are you suggesting, Dr Filth: we invade or start bombing Saudi Arabia and/or Syria?
Personally I think we go too far in courting the Saudis as a matter of fact - the state visit accorded their king a few years ago was a disgrace. I am not sure President Assad is looked on quite so favourably tho.
Personally I don't believe our media at all.
Gadaffi is demonised but held power for 40 years without anybody bumping him off.
Iraq has been a hellhole since Saddam Hussein was removed.
Castro in Cuba is painted as a despot but the Cubans let him rule for 50 years
That North Korean chap is painted as a complete fruitcake but still holds power.
Robert Mugabe is a racist, torturing madman but is still in charge after 30 years..

All these leaders must be ,or had been, keeping plenty of people happy to survive as long as they did or do!

Don't believe the hype..There's oil in Libya that's all that matters.
WBA perhaps its the case of the devil you know..
ichkeria i am not suggesting anything

just pointing out that what some members have said is happening in other coutries as amnesty and other groups like to also point out

You don't think that, perhaps, another reason for heir longevity is the matter of jailing, killing and/or terrorising all their opponents??
Where are the crowds of desolate Gaddafi supporters, wringing their hands in despair at his passing, or marching, at his request, to overthrow the rebels?

As for oil, there wasn't a lot of it in either Kosovo or Sierra Leone...
