If you receive a call claiming to be a rep from BT do not under any circumstances give out your credit card details, its a scam. They say you haven't paid your bill and will cut you off if you don't give them your numbers, doesn't matter if you aren't with BT, they have all the answers ready and they even "pretend" to cut you off.

Jayne, I didn't fall for it, & I'm elderly and vulnerable, (so they say) I had the call this morning from a sweet Indian man. I told him to hang on while I got my credit card....

I think he's still hanging on. awww!

Never ever would but thanks for the heads up.
No matter who calls you, you don't give out that sort of info.
Trouble is BT CS are so bad these days no one would consider this sort of thing beyond them.
I don't have a C/C but will let my friends know. Thank you for the info.
I'll be OK because I automatically tell anyone I don't want to know and put the phone down. |My husband says he has probably won lots of cars in Fifth Gear but won't get them because I tell them I'm not interested!
indeed this one has been around for a while.

Unfortunately its the elderly and vunerable who are likely to fall for this.
I hadn't heard of this one, thanks for the heads up!

Nice one! I will do this next time I get any nuisance calls!
You are right of course many elderly are falling for it, because it would seem the crooks have found a way to appear to have cut the line, but they can't of course, but if you aren't aware of what's going on, they might be tempted to give all the details over the phone. I am sure it was featured on one the crime programmes, crime watch, or that one with Dom Littlewood
you should never give details out to someone who has phoned you...always say you will find your card and call the company back on their official number...then if its genuine, no problem, if not, then still no problem.

i genuine caller will understand that.
How they 'cut people off'

They tell the person to check their line then wait for them to end the call but don't hang up themselves.
That way, if the victim tries to test their line they won't be able to get a dialling tone as their line is still open.

They wait 5 mins then redial to work on them again. Like all cons; pretty despicable.
zeuhl, yes i remember the piece on tv, sadly some of the poor people were conned.
I would string the perps up no problem.
Quick answer to these calls, wait for them to talk, put phone done. Simple.
jayne-123 - nice one for alerting anyone who may have been duped by this.

I often get calls saying they are Talktalk. They start by giving you your name and then ask loads of personal questions. Whether this is a general call from Talktalk I often put the phone down without disclosing anything. They hold all these personal details anyway so why they need to ask them again baffles me.
