While it must be a time of rejoicing for the individual students and their families, do the rest of the nation wish to see students (mostly girls) jumping up and down, squealing and waving their result papers in the air?

AOG.....I would "jump up and down squealing and waving my exam paper" if I was as thick as "two short planks"and still managed to pass an examination.
I am just sorry that the exams have been devalued due to a Political and idealistic philosophy that all students need to pass an exam and the real hard workers are "lumped " into this quagmire of false achievement.

/// you aint never watched a big brother challenge then old g ?!///
Never Ankou, except of course that well known clip of George Galloway dressed as a cat, that was enough for me.
This hysteria seems to be on the increase, the yelling, whooping and the squealing on such shows as The 'X Factor' and 'Britain Got Talent'
Why??? can't the audiences just clap these days?
Then there is the increase in flower laying at some spot of an accident or murder etc.
Why???? some who lay them do not even know the deceased.

It's simply because a lot of their readership have kids in school and they're very concerned about the grades they will get so they're interested in exam trends.
This year is special for A level students because it's the last year you can get into University at the old cheaper rates - that's made the competition spectacularly intense so it's particularly newsworty this year.
Next year there will be a lot of interest in whether the applications are down

Regarding your first paragraph, I cannot see why the readership having kids at school should make any difference, as the readership and viewers have always had kids at school, surely?
Agree though with your second paragraph regarding this year being a special case, due to the reasons you mentioned.
Next year we will have to see, but what is certain there will still be an increased number showing their emotions for all to see once again.
