This is not 18th century Georgian England, the days of Footpads and the Bow Street runners, no this is London in the year 2011.

The difference being, back in the 18th century they knew how to deal with footpads, and that was to string them up at Tyburn.

Excuse spelling of 'their'!!
The article in the original post emphasises robberies on schoolkids.
Now, if they would follow the school requests NOT to bring expensive items such as phones and jewellery to school, there would not be a problem. No?

Mosaic - isn't that he same argument as 'she was dressed provocatively and therefore was asking for it'?
not only that, Steve.5, but juries were often reluctant to convict people knowing they'd be hanged for stealing a loaf of bread; so people went free.

I sort of see aog as an 18th-century judge, hanging three men before dinner every day.

That would be deemed as sexist jno.

One should not leave the fairer sex out.
"Yes, but then I still live in a little bit of England, that still exists."

Does my bit of England not exist then?

If not then... where am I? Do I exist?

Is AOG getting philosophical?

I was not addressing you or anyone else personally, I was simply addressing my own particular situation.
Between 1770 and 1830, 35,000 death sentences were handed down in England and Wales, but only 7,000 executions were carried out.

I'm sure there were more than 35,000 robberies in 60 years, so the only conclusion can be that must be that the robbers mostly got away with it.
