I was interested to hear that the so called green belt they are fussing about used to be ....a scrapyard. I wish I was not an Essex council tax payer. What a staggering waste of money. Just charge them for planning permission and have done.

They seem to have forgotten what 'traveller' actually means.
We suffer from travellers in my town on a seasonal basis. Not so many people would mind if they actually respected the land they take over and cleared their litter away when they leave but they never do.
Local schools have to leave places open for these people potentially robbing people from within their own catchment of a school place.

There was an area that was a scrap yard... they took that over; and subsequently appropriated an additional area of Greenbelt land to the rear.

That has been the main focus of this 10-year battle.

I have no sympathy with these so called travellers but I have one simple
question . If they have broken the law why didn't the council remove them from the site 10 years ago , or anytime since. . It would have been much cheaper and simpler.
We have a similar problem near us and despite constant complaints the council failed to take positive action. When they did start to act the owner of the land quite rightly said " You haven't done anything for 15 years why start now , nothing has changed. ." I should imagine the Dale Farm mob are saying the same.

I am neutral on the issue of these travellers, as I don't know enough about the situation to make a judgment, but I very much sympathise with and share jake-the-peg's disgust at some of the comments.

The scrapyard could have been there since the dawn of the mechanical age. It doesn't detract from the fact that the land immediately beyond its border hedgerow was designated as Greenbelt-land......and the uses of such land are strictly limited.
