A coroner in Galway has ruled that a 76 year old man had died as a result of spontaneous combustion.
How can I keep cool enough to avoid the risk of bursting into flames?

Read that artical also, he was laying found in front of the fire. They beleive there was an ignition point, but so badly burnt dont now where. Perhaps he was already dead and the heat of the fire , extracted the fats from his body and ignited. So dont lay in front of the fire!!!!
wear and drink shorts.

its thought to be down to chemical reactions within the body. but perhaps you could carry a small fire extinguisher with you at all times?
Like that answer Vulcan!

Drinking shorts, no problem. Wearing shorts? My knobbly knees are not a sight fit for human eyes.
Thanks dido, it was a spontaneous thought.
Indian build small fire stand real close,
White man build BIG fire stand way back....
fat plus wick effect from textiles low levels of oxygen replacement almost total cremation...without the heat for the fire to spread, fatty soot damage though is common

This reminds heard me of a true story heard years ago. A young lad who was not too bright was sitting close to the fire. After a while he turns to his Mother and said "ma, ma, am I too warm ?
Don't let the urine stains build up on the section of your trousers facing the fire ;-)
I remember reading yonks ago that a woman "combusted" walking along the street ! hot stuff !
keep a fire extinguisher in your y-fronts and impress the ladies at the same time
Spontaneous human combustion... is apparently a myth, humans that have errupted into flames have all had an ignition source, usually the fire that they are sat in front of and usually already dead at the time of combustion, and these people are usually very overweight and the excess fat acting as the fuel.

I remember seeing a programme on TV investigating this "phenomena" many years ago. I doubt if anything has changed since.

I heard that as

Indian build small fire and sit by it to keep warm
White man build big fire; keep warm gathering wood.
Don't go near a fire.
