In a war zone like Iraq or Afghanistan you regard everyone as your enemy. If the terrorists decided to wear some sort of uniform they could prevent the loss of civilian life.

Horrific i agree. But shouldn't we say the same when an insurgent plants a bomb, and kills not just allied soldiers, but their own men, women and children.

I think, Jake, that the point is that he would not have killed an US child as he is not inherantly a murderer. The horrors that the forces in Afghan are subjected to on a daily basis means that they can see enemies everywhere and that they can get a warped sense of right and wrong. Whilst I am not condoning his actions in any way, anymore than I would condone any other such act, I think that the sentence is a fair one. He will have to live with the horror of what he has done as well as the shame and the dishonour of his unit for the rest of his life and I think that is punishment enough.

I doubt if shame or thoughts of the honour of his regiment weighed heavily on him.
