Should the Sikhs be allowed the privilege of not to having their turbans hand searched at airports?

After all every male can be asked to remove his trousers if necessary, all in the name of security.

It seems though that tolerant Britain is once again taking the initiative by putting the rest of Europe's airport security right.

/// Aviation Minister Theresa Villiers said: "I fully recognise the cultural and religious sensitivities surrounding the touching of a Sikh's turban, which is why this Government acted swiftly when the Sikh community expressed concern about new EU rules on the searching of turbans at airports. ///

/// "I have also written to ministers across Europe with responsibility for aviation security to explain this trial and to underline the importance the UK attaches to resolving this issue."///

Me too Craft. I always hope it's going to be a George Clooney lookalike who gets the job - but it never is. :o(
More sh*t stirring in the extreme.

If they've passed through a scanner without activating the alarm then why would they need to remove the turban for a further search?

We hear a lot about Muslim radicals and extremism. As far as I'm aware, Sikh extremism in the current era has yet to rear its ugly head........

Many Sikh families in this country have a far greater bond with the UK than most other 'home grown' extremists.

Maybe the ones who are required to removed their turbans have set off the alarm - just as I have done when I've been searched.
I am sikh individual born in this country and i just want to make it known the only reason this country is not under nazi rule is because of the TURBAN wearing sikhs that faught for Great Britain in World War 1 and 2....infact approx 80 odd thousand sikhs dided for great britain and over 100 thousand were injured...nobody then appeared to have an issue with the turban wearing sikhs....

here is a quote from the great Winston Churchill:

"...British people are highly indebted and obliged to Sikhs for a long time. I know that within this century we needed their help twice and they did help us very well. As a result of their timely help, we are today able to live with honour, dignity, and independence. In the war, they fought and died for us, wearing the turbans. At that time we were not adamant that they should wear safety helmets because we knew that they are not going to wear them anyways and we would be deprived of their help. At that time due to our miserable and poor situation, we did not force it on them to wear safety helmets, why should we force it now? Rather, we should now respect their traditions and by granting this legitimate concession, win their applaud."

In addition can i also mention the queens personal bodygaurds are TURBAN WEARING SIKHS!!!!

in the last two World Wars 83,005 turban wearing Sikh soldiers were killed and 109,045 were wounded while fighting across 3 continents
If our five year old can be patted down (with our permission) then I think it is only right that they are asked to remove their turbans (but maybe behind a screen or something?).
singhisking I see you're very new to the AnswerBank.
With respect, I think there's a lot more reasons why we're not under Nazi control.
singhisking (or who ever you actually are!!) you have given some lovely figures but seem to have forgotten to show figures for all other nationalities/religions. Without the numbers of deaths for all the others involved being included your argument is meaningless, I would hazard a guess that the numbers you have supplied make up only a couple of percent of all wounded or dead soldiers from the two World Wars.
what is the relevance of that sikhisking - there has been various tension issues between Muslims and Sikhs in India and here in the UK - and various beheadings. That must cause security concerns.

Not withstanding that, any Sikh, Muslim, or even a Christian is capable of extreme incidents on a plane and all should be subjected to the right to remove clothing, religious or not, in a dignified manner if so requested.

I am sure that not all Sikhs are searched, neither are Muslims under the Abaya or the Bisht or Taqiyah, or Christians undea coat or hat.

And then we have the radicalism of Dal Khalsa just to add some more worry to security.

Calls about one way tickets here are so puerile but, unfortunately, they are serious - there are some abhorrent people on AB who would welcome this, though most folk are decent multi-cultural and pluralistic societal accepting folk. Those who are not are disgusting and reflect the worst of British nationalism. We know who they are.
Wasn't it a Sikh who planted a bomb on a plane from Canada where 329 people were killed?
Makes you kinda sick doesn't it when there is an incident, sik .....
There are some folk who seem to think that if you can't trace the family tree back to Alfred The Great's neighbour then you're not really English and should be grateful for being allowed to live here...
Who would that be then, Corbyloon?
I really dont care what Nationality you are or how long you have lived here. If you cannot abide by our laws and respect this Country you have no business being here.

This applies to myself and all of my family who to my knowledge are British throughout!

Quite correct Sandy, but the bomb was in a suitcase not a turban.

Don't be talking about bombs in turbans. Remember the Danish cartoonist who drew that image and is now living in fear for his life.
AOG, at your time of life you don't want to be the subject of a fatwa.
anotheoldgit: The one person that was convicted in the plane bombing probably deserved to and did go down in the end and I'm in no way condoning or denying this most grave and abhorrent incident but there was outside pressure from the Canadian, American and indian governements to bring someone to justice quickly. This happened in the context time period of operation bluestar in India, which is one of the darkest days in Indian History and one of the most repressive acts a government has carried out against its civilians. Critically, history also tells us that policitians and public anger bring fickle justice to the masses immediately after a time of a horrific tragedy. And to use ABC news articles to support debates on a seperate yet important issue is a bit naive at best. Next you'll be quoting CNN (or good old Bush himself!) for the latest intelligence reports!
