The scariest comments I have read for a long time.

The ignorant haven't even bothered to read the article properly that clearly states - it cost nothing! Not one penny.
I could cry over the comments about sending them to Poland

One suggests putting a zebra crossing in instead. Aside from the fact that that would actually cost money where the proposed plan doesn't, the person who suggested that has obviously got no idea what the North Circular looks like. A zebra crossing would be a disaster.
I only read about 6 comments before I got bored of reading people's views who haven't bothered to read the article.

// They are not allowed to use electricity or operate machinery on the Sabbath//
Really ! Do they turn off their fridges /freezers , central heating , lights, tvs, radios, PCs , laptops , etc, etc. Does the Green Man work without electricity ?
They may not physically turn these things off but they are all using electricity.

Modeller - Exactly, they use electricity throughout the Sabbath.Their law forbids them turning a switch, because that would be "labour" on the Sabbath, but they are happy for others to work in the power station. If they really loved their God and believed in keeping his law as recorded in the Old Testament, they would happily accept the inconveniences of doing so, and would not be continually seeking technical loopholes to avoid them.
there seems to be a bit of ignorance here.. orthodox Jews follow their religion. they don't touch a lightswitch.
if you saw the documentary a couple of months back (the only way is kosher??) you would have seen all the preparations for the sabbath, including putting loose tissues in the toilet as they're not allowed to tear toilet roll.

My cooker is a run of the mill electric cooker I bought from a main store made by a major company.
In the manual (yes, I do rtfm) it tells it has Sabbath settings. This is specifically for Jews so they can put food in their oven before the Sabbath and programme it to turn on and off during the Sabbath.
I'm not offended, this feature did not cost me extra money, was not promoted in the store and actually has been useful to me!
This crossing will be just the same. Non Jews won't notice the hands free setting and will continue to press the button, people with their hands full of shopping, babies, toddlers will be pleasantly surprised if the lights change automatically.
The people from the synagogue have not demanded this, have not made threats of violence or anything else. They have, when consulted, mentioned the problem they have and a free solution has been found that will not adversely affect anyone.
Why the vitriolic comments?
