If the time handed out in court is inappropriate to the crime, then comments about not doing the crime if you can't do the time are equally inappropriate. One could justify any sentencing otherwise. Have his torso pulled into in four by four shire horses, then off with his head and on a pike with it, , and his innards scattered to the four winds. Well he ought not have committed the crime so apparently he has nothing to complain of.
agree, OG. They're not doing the time - they're doing time imposed after normal rules have been suspended (ie broken) at politicians' behest
I can't see Sainsburys actually losing their livelihood because someone's taken a bottle of beer.
As for that guy who got four weeks for a bottle of water - ludicrous.
This happened because police were asleep and politicians were away. To cover up for their own incompetence, they've ordered courts to break the rules.

I don't know what the comments about a Government fund for criminal damage relate to. When I worked in the brewery and people were sentenced to pay compensation for criminal damage, half the time we never saw the money, or got it at 50p a week - it was the individuals who should pay, not a central fund. I honestly don't have any sympathy for this lad being unable to sleep - the sentences were swingeing but the fact remains, he got involved in illegal events, he paid the price.
Do you know why I wasn't arrested on any of the nights upon which the rioting occured?
Or that anyone else in my family wasn't arrested? (notwithstanding Location as a factor)........it's that none of us would have taken it into our minds (at whatever age) to consider it to be any sort of idea, other than a very bad one, to break into a shop into the middle of a riot and steal *anything*....
It is to be regretted that this young fool will have to carry the ignominy of having been banged up for stealing a bottle of beer (how much lower could he have set his sights?) for the remainder of his life but he had a choice of whether to walk away or to carry on with his 'plan'........he made it and now must live with the consequences.
