They say they will stay till Christmas. I wonder if the parade can go ahead now?
Should they be "forced out" now?
if so, how could this be be enforced,
The Bankers don't give a stuff that these people are protesting !, and what have they achieved by it?

Maybe they'll just do their parade elsewhere like Westminster Abbey.

What have they achieved? They are achieving what theyt out to achieve namely to keep issues like reform of the banks in the public eye and up the agenda.,

And Frankly when the Chancellor is saying "Yes but in 8 years" I can see why they are protesting!

You've also got Tories on the TV going on about how much regulation is costing the City.

Well excuse me but the cost of not enough regulation seems to have been severl hundred Billion!

Jake, in theory I see what they are protesting about too but the sheer arrogance of the Finance sector and the politicians around them means they are basically just a hindrance, that's all
Question Author
but Triggs, it hasn't and won't achieve anything at all

So just because the fight seems hard, the enemy invincible, people should just give up?

And why would you be advocating the use of force to break up a legal and peaceful demonstration?
bobbisox, i asked you something similar about one of your posts on another thread and you didn't answer.

would you have said this of the suffragettes ?
Question Author
yes I suppose I am, if there were to be a victory at the end of it I might say, well OK, but as there won't be, they are wasting time and preventing things happening in the Capital like visiting St Paul's and maybe the forthcoming Poppy Day parade, where is this hurting the Bankers?
It is achieving something

We are talking about it

Whilst we're talking about it there is pressure for reform

Without them the issue would just get brushed under the carpet and forgotten.

Which is what the city fat cats want

They want to be freed from regulation to do what they want regardless of the consequences.

And of course their chums in the media paint the protestors as a bunch of anarchists and hippies that should be ignored or forced out with brute force.

I'm sure many a journalist has had many a comfortable London luch out whilst receiving that "briefing"
...and again, who really gives a stuff about st pauls not accepting paying visitors ?
If they really want to make their point in a peaceful way, they should stop the protest for the Armistice Day weekend and return on the Monday. This would earn them more respect and would honour our Service Men and Women who gave their lives so that they Can peacefully protest.

Ankou, I didn't see ..sorry
the suffragettes were fighting for the rights of women, they achieved this but I don't see anything at all that these people are or will achieve
LG, in my OP.I asked a question "Should they be "forced out" now?"
and in my opinion, I think they should

Ankou, so you don't care about a place as iconic as St Pauls?
They have been there long enough now for anyone to take notice of them, how can stopping there till Christmas benefit their cause any more?

Given a good downpour of rain for a few days, followed by sharp frosts, sleet and snow, then they will soon scurry back from whence they came.
The point of any demonstration is to gain public focus, to gain media attention, and to continually reinforce the point. This particular protest has been extremely successful in doing that.

Individual bankers may not give a stuff , but thats not really the point - the point is to galvanise public opinion and perhaps gain some traction with banking reform / tobin tax etc, so the banking institutions will care.

Life is not a video game - just because you do not attain immediate gratification does not mean you just pack up and do something else instad.
St Pauls has survived for 400 years........including attacks by the Luftwaffe, I think it'll withstand the 'assault' of a few Peaceniks.
You don't like them so force should be used?

I'm sure many men thought the same of suffragettes.

Resorting to force when you can't win the argument is a clear admission of the weakness of your case.

Perhaps you could sling them in gaol until they agree with you and stop behaving disrespectfully to the things that you value.

Would you like a gold plated pistol for Christmas?

and I would imagine they have cars and own homes, or live in homes owned by parents etc;
Capitalism??

@Bobbi - you are of course entitled to your opinion - but the day that force becomes the accepted, automatic recourse of the authorities in the face of legitimate, peaceful protest is the day we stop being a democracy and cross the line into tyranny.
