obviously this is tragic and horrific thing to happen but why are they going on about him being gay and it being a homophobic attack...and using it as the headlines!?
i know they acknowledge that they dont actually know yet, in the text of the article, but why title it that way?
this info has NOT emerged at all...its just a thought...

surely they know it will just provoke irrational hysteria from the gay community... (i myself was alerted to this story by about 4-5 of my gay pals freaking out on facebook about it...)

it appears there is no evidence whatsoever to support this claim, its just a suspicion, so why are they trying to stir up something that might be irrelevant?

to address any crime with a 'could be because of' is lazy journalism...it could be due to any number reasons - he was abusive to them, some jealous ex, because he is white, because he was just there at the time...who knows?

has anyone read any proper evidence of this?

thanks

Oh DT, i couldnt care less if you understand...its irrelevant to me...i am entitled to ask any question i want...that you dont 'get' it doesnt concern me...

SP...yes your second post is my point...that to most people they will take it as a homophobic attack...regardless of the wording...and as i said, there is already a hoohaa on FB about from plenty of peope who have not considered what the police are actually claiming and just taken it as a forgone conclusion.

it would not be the first time the press have tried to 'lead' public opinion, without 'actually' making definite claims with the use of clever wording....

SP, re: your first post, its pointless to say its unlikely to be one thing or another because something 'seems wrong' to you...you are not a murderer and you were not there, so how would you know?

the point is, until they actually have SOME evidence, speculating about a subject like this is just asking for people to jump to conclusions....
this is mild, in the scottish rags they are claiming that a "gay slayer" is on the loose.
Did I question your right to post a question, joko? I did not. It was ummmm that seeded that thought perhaps and I shot it down.

It is also my right to make a comment as well or pehaps you are an advocate for the repression of comments.

It doesn't surprise me that you make such asinine comments given your flippant remarks about irrelevancy. Please read the contents on your threads with care, perhaps just like reading the contents of the Press articles.
The Scotsman has a well balanced article, one would expect that, I guess.

The Record is what I guess Ankou is refering to!

re; the issue of potentially warning other gay people in the area that they are at risk...surely thats just scaremongering and frightening the hell out of people without any evidence!

...and also could lead to random unfounded gossip and accusations and even vigilante revenge attacks...

for instance, if a local man is known to dislike gays, or if someone had a few weeks earlier called this man a gay insult...they could be blamed for this...

people can be immenslely ignorant and react badly where fear, anger and revenge are involved...

i notice it says '...police would not rule it out'... i wonder if this means this is the papers who have jumped to these conclusions and are 'leading' the police in the interviews...?
It could also be the other way round too, that the police are giving strong "signals" out to the Press to send a warning to take care, i.e. they are onto something but not yet prepared to come out with it as the investigation is ongoing.

Lynch mobs are a relatively rare thing in UK news items, it must be added.

Also, I would surmise that the Press and the Police have to exercise some temperance in their remarks following the complete mess-up in the Bristol Yates case and the accusations thrown at the innocent Landlord. That was a costly mistake for many of them.
Question Author
come off it DT...you attacked me for shyte stirring...when i just asked a question... i need no defence for it...

as always, you do not have to read the thread if you dont like/understand it...
Question Author
agreed lynch mobs are rare...but revenge attacks are not really...

i am just saying its possible
Question Author
i know if someone did that to my brother, i am not sure i would be able to control myself if i knew who it was ... and i have the intelligence to know better and know suspicion is not enough, and to know it would only hurt me in the long run...not everyone thinks like that

its hard to say how it would affect someone
Question Author
i sincerely hope they have some secret information here...it would make more sense that they were hiding some actual evidence...and trying to give 'veiled' warnings...
(i) agree to disagree
(ii) just hope that there isn't an overt gay-basher out there as revenge attackers may get the wrong person. However, most gay folk that I know are usually sane, considerate people - there is the chance of course.
(iii) Yes, that is always the case - I have been kidnapped for ransom briefly (overseas) and even though it wasn't pleasant it was an interesting experience of one's resilience - and the effects go on for much longer than you realise. A murder of a family member or even worse offspring, well who knows and hopefully no one here has been/will be put in that position. So agree

(iv) I hope so too, as it can lead to a speedier resolution.
DT - you posted <I really don't see the purpose of this thread except to shyte-stir.>

I simply asked how.
aog: the Guardian differs in naming a source for the claim that there's been "speculation". If the Telegraph had done that I would have said their headline and first sentence had more justification.
it could have been a gay perpetrator?
where would that leave the scaremongers?

awful story though! x
One wonders whether Jan Moore of the Mail will somehow be able to link THIS death to Stuart Walker's 'gay lifestyle'...as she so memorably did with Stephen Gately.

I await with bated breath...
You were selective because the accusation was of speculation yet you didn't include the quote where the Guardian attributed the source of that speculation.

Non-attributed speculation is the stock in trade of cheap rubbish journalism

Things like "there is concern today that Labour will ya de yah"

Really? Whose concern - well the blokes in the editorial meeting actually!

I'm not Saying the Guardian would never do it - but they shouldn't and you'll hopefully find it much less often
Tragic story, Scotland isn't very gay friendly.

Did anyone notice the other Telegraph headline under related articles?

Boy mauled by dog drunk on Stella!
Question Author
what quote JTP?
I've only skim-read the link, but maybe someone could clear something up for me - is it the press who have started calling this a hate crime, or the police? I'm aware the police 'won't rule it out' (and so they shouldn't), but who is actually instigating the 'homophobic attack' angle?
