The 'Christmas banned' story has become one of things that signals the start of the season (like the Coca-Cola advert or the inevitable songs that we're subject to repeatedly). Very glad somebody has pre-empted its surfacing on AB, even if it seems part of the 'Christmassy things arriving far too early' trend :P.

not so sure myself, as read of one recent local event that they are calling something daft, sorry i have recycled the local paper, otherwise would tell you it's name, but it's a Christmas event, but called something else simply because the local council, or whoever is responsible thought it would offend many of our diverse community.

em, for certain Christmas based events, maybe it was just so it would be open no non-Christians so as to not isolate them. To me that seems fair enough if you do live in a very diverse community. Surely it would be a positive move to bring the different communities together.

I believe the claim that Christmas had been replaced by Winterval was made in a Mail column by Melanie Phillips. When someone wrote in to disagree, she replied in her polite and reasonable way: "Winterval buried 'Christmas' and replaced it in the public mind. Your message is therefore as arrogant and ignorant as it is offensive." But the Mail corrected it anyway.

According to the Guardian, she resigned from the Spectator a while back because the Spectator dared to apologise for something she'd got wrong. I don't know if she will find herself morally bound to do the same again.

I have noticed it before, but it is worth repeating again - Many who have the more zealous approach to their Christmas pear to exhibit the same, rather unattractive trait of "lying by that, I mean misrepresenting the science, claiming a background they clearly do not have in a pathetic attempt to "argue from authority", cherry picking quotations, creation of sock puppets-to bolster their stated clap... position.
