We have all read reports that we are not allowed to fly the flag, and many have said that such reports are only rumors, circulated by such newspapers as the Daily Mail.

Well it seems in some parts of the country it is true, not reported by the Daily Mail but by the impartial BBC.

Am I unduely cynical to think that the complaints came from native pritains and that if they'd come from an Asian familly it would have been splashed al over the tabloids?

Some of the arguments against the flag in this village flying every day are, it would seem, to do with the idea that it devalues the impact on special occasions.
At least the council is listening to local people here, whether you agree with them or not.
Anyway, it's not an "EU bans the union flag" type story, which I'd been expecting, but perhaps such stories are indeed the preserve of the Daily Wail :-)

I fail to see his argument when he said "How would they feel if I flew the Caribbean flag?". Unless he failed to notice, the Union Flag was being flown in a borough of Nottinghamshire, not a beach on Tobago.

It is a rather silly decision and it's a bit of a pity that the council felt it had to interfere. If the villagers want to raise it, then it seems it's pretty much their business to me...

But I must say I think the way you've used this story is a bit silly. I don't think one rather odd council making people fly the flag on special occasions only is a particularly demonstrative example of the idea that the flag is 'banned'. It's a rather tepid example of a council making a silly decision which you're sensationalising quite a bit.

It's definately in there Krom. I don't think the council interfered as such - some people (as far as I can tell just the two of them) complained about the flag being up, and the council presumably petrified of doing something politically incorrect, stupidly said, 'Oh dear we'll take it down then' instead of saying 'Don't be daft, it's a British flag, you're British, and we're in Britain'.

In Finland it is considered disrespect to the country to fly their flag in darkness. Every flag in the country must be lowered at dusk.
