what about beer? is that ok?
Question Author
Beer, I would imagine is vital!
By "these nutters", I assume that you mean UKIP and the Daily Express.
Even the Express finally admit in their article that "EU spokesman David D’Arcy said last night: “Of course drinking water is essential for health and the commission is not stopping anyone from saying so."
Typical Daily Express none story.

That reminds me not to buy their paper.
beer made without water? Good luck
Yeah right ..and this was in the Daily Express?
.. I hesitate to introduce a factual (if boring) note here ...

Dehydration is a potentially life threatening condition - often caused by severe diahorrea.

Treating a dehydrated person with pure water is potentially dangerous and may actually worsen their condition - re-hydration should be done with a properly balanced electrolytic solution (eg dioralyte) which is balanced mixture of salts and sugars.

In an emergency you could use a home made preparation of :

* 30 ml (6 level tsp) of sugar
* 2.5 ml (1/2 level tsp) of salt
* dissolved into 1 litre of clean water

Any suggestion on a bottle of pure water that it can be used for 're-hydration' is utterly wrong and the EU doctors are correct in banning such advertising.

The Express is (as so often) banging on with a knee-jerk anti-european agenda - without either checking the facts, or appreciating the harm its mindless posturing may cause.

<grumpy dave>
this is pure water as in bottled water? What about tap water, does that contain the correct salts and minerals to re-hydrate?
No
Any water is fine for 'I feel thirsty and need a drink' - re-hydration refers to a more serious condition which needs proper treatment.
Steady on, Dave...

Reasoned scientific responses and the Express (or mail) should never be mixed in the same thread, you'll make the average readers brain explode.
<sunny dave> grins :)
Anybody who reads the chemical analysis on bottled water will know that it's anything but "pure"!
Why would anyone pay for bottled water?
maggie: more money than sense.

I think water is involved in rehydration, The hydra part of that is a clue.

So those guys in the deserts in 60's movies were dam fools when they drank from that oasis! deadly!
Slaking a thirst is NOT the same as re-hydrating.......it may just be semantics, but these adverts are making claims that are medically incorrect.
P.S. Not to self, Kayless..............

Before making smug comments be sure of your facts..........Hydra was a mythological creature.

Hydro, however, has a connection with water........
Question Author
The Hydra was part of the word rehydration as quoted, I am well aware of the hydro/hydra
Question Author
but water is part of rehydration isn't it?
