3,500 girls are at risk of mutilation in the capital

The report by black and ethnic minority women's organisation Imkaan found that in the city 3,500 baby girls are born every year to mothers who have suffered female genital mutilation, and therefore are at risk themselves. This is an increase of 65 per cent in 10 years.

The Forced Marriage Unit dealt with 330 cases of women and girls at risk of forced marriage in London last year.

This is happening in 21st century Britain. How do we stop it?

I suppose we have to try to educate them 'beyond the pull of their cultural imperatives'.......quite how that happens, I am at a loss.

But both are an outrage in 21st Century.

Education, prosecution - but remember, and I am not being facitious, this is done in allahs name so we can but hope that as the children grow they know better than thier elders.

If there is intervention by the social services (fat chance) there will be howls about culture, religion and racism. The fact that even one case is a disgusting travesty, hasn't stopped it happening and its been quite well known for a long time.

I think that just like honour killings the authorities are in denial.

To stop it the authorities have to identify the at risk babies and keep an eye on them. How exactly they are to do that I don't know.

What age are the victims when is this crime is perpetrated ?

As far as i was aware it was more a traditional regional practise then a religious requirement.

As said above education (Which i believe is happening in some parts of the country) and as said above hard heavy prosecution for any doctors, nurses or surgeons that preform or take part in this procedure as well as spreading the word via leaflets gp's and community centres etc.. that this practice is not regarding as normal, is a crime and will not be tolerated.

A zero tolerance procedure needs to be put into place to help protect these future generations.

I do note that the article refers to an incease of births to mothers who have had this inflicted in the past, and not an increased risk to those born now. Is that significant ?

I also noticed this old geezer but assumed that the paper had hard evidence and stats to say that those who have been mutilated go on to mutilate others.

This couldn't be just tabloid scaremongering could it?

I agree that a zero tolerance approach needs to be implemented against this appalling practice, anyone found involved in this heinous crime needs a mantadory prison sentence- and I am usually very much normally for prison being used as a last resort.

Unfortunately many things are done in the name of religion, some trivial, some more serious.

Wearing a turban, eating fish on a friday, not working on a Saturday, carrying a knife, praying every 4 hours, forcing your wife to wear a burkah, boys circumcision, the list goes on.

Almost all of these are done in the name of "religion", the rules set by "man" because that is what they thought their "god" wants.

All rather ridiculous.

Monkeyfun I hate to even think this but I doubt it's nurses and surgeons who perform these rituals. They should be so lucky.

Correct me if I am ill informed, but I thought that the clitoris was removed AFTER marriage, so that they couldn't enjoy sex with anyone else. I didn't think that at was done at birth or in the early childhood years.

I understand that this procedure is usually performed by a "cutter" often brought in from other countries, she is usually booked to perform this barbaric act on many young girls whilst in the country and has no medical training what soever, she will even charge extra if you require a fresh blade to be used.

Ladybirder yes i see your point, maybe those descriptions were too good for them and i should've used the word "unqualified butcher" or maybe abattoir wannabees as these illegal blood filled backstreet establishments don't abide by our regulations or h&s so some must resemble a slaughterhouse.

Since when have Irish traveller girls been at risk of genital mutilation? I was aware that some cultures practice this but I had no idea that travellers did it too.
