My daughter actually said she finds things like that irritating as it trivialises women into being precieved as poor things that constantly feel they need to prove themselves against men, when in fact the majority of women in the UK are equal in every sense of the word to men and not in need of instruction on whether they should live up to a stereotype or not. I'm pretty glad she said that as if she'd been worried about soemthing like that I'd have felt I'd failed as parent in instilling a sense of self worth into her.

That's ok NOX. I haven't actually been in Hamleys for years, but my experience of other large toyshops is that I prefer stuff to be laid out by toy type rather than having "gender zones" for want of a better term. Even if, in practice, that means lots of traditionally "male" or "female" toys may still be grouped together.
'Parents know what their child is interested in, regardless of their gender'...Not like me to disagree with a statement from AOG, but I feel pressed to on this occasion.
My parents didn't allow me 'boy's toys' ie anything I was interested in. That was in a past generation - but now, post-women's liberation and so-called equality of opportunity, commercial pressure on kids knows very few bounds. Girls who do not conform to stereotypes even at very young ages are given negative labels and we should be looking to reduce pressure on kids, not fall in with it. So I think major retailers should not enforce notions of girls or boys toys.

/// Not like me to disagree with a statement from AOG, but I feel pressed to on this occasion. ///
Then please allow me to equally disagree with your statement:
/// My parents didn't allow me 'boy's toys' ie anything I was interested in. That was in a past generation ///
That was your parents attitude, that is in no way typical of all past parents.
Surprisingly enough I was once a child in a 'past generation' and I am pleased to say my parents had only my interests at heart, but then in those far off days things were much clearer Boys were Boys and Girls were Girls.
These days the poor little mites don't know what they are, thanks to all the brainwashing they receive from some of their elders.
Just let their sexuality mature in the natural way, not how some activists would wish it to.
