Was the keeper in order to repeatedly kick this yob while he was on the floor.

Should he have been given a red card, and should the match have been abandoned?

«The thug deserved what he got, he could have seriously injured the keeper, possibly putting him out of action for some time.

The thug was obviously a bit dim anyway, the keeper is usually the biggest bloke on the field.»

My answer from the other thread over in the Sport section.

Kicking someone when they are on the floor... in the UK he would probably be charged with assault.. and rightly so. Defending yourself is one thing its a fine line betweeen that and excessive violence
now, this is a good article to compare with that of 'big man', as this is clearly where the line has been crossed, if the pitch invader's on the floor and the 'keeper keeps kicking him, that's assault!

for a video link.

yes and yes. and should be replayed as Ajax obviously did not have control of their crowd.
yes to the red card and yes to the replay to be clear. The goalkeeper went to far, though understandable to some extent
up to a point... if someone attacks you, I think the idea of self-defence allows you to do more than just kick him back once; you're entitled to try to prevent any further attacks too. So continuing to kick him might be legit. Exactly how far you're allowed to go would be up to a jury to decide (and would vary from one country to another).
"Was the keeper in order ..." - clearly not. This is a case of assault, pure and simple, and as a professioanl sportsman the keeper should have shown restraint and walked away.

"Should he have bee given a red card ..." - yes. The keeper is engaged in a professional football match and the rules regarding violence on the pitch are clear. His provocation does not excuse his reaction.

"Should the match have been abandoned ..." - yes, it would be an incitement to further violence potentially endangering players and spectators to continue, so abandonment was the correct course of action - possibly again with the rules of the preofessional game, i am no expert, but certainly within the remit of common sense and safety first.
I don't normally advocate this sort of behaviour but if a guy came to my place of work and attacked me for no apparent reason, having got him on the floor and given the nature of such football hooligans I'd have made sure he wasn't going to be getting up anytime soon to have another pop at me.

The keeper was isolated, he made sure the attacker wouldn't get another pop at him.
He only kicked the guy twice when he was on the floor, hardly excessive in my opinion.
I can't find a video- there doesn't seem to be one now on the Guardian link- but from the photos and reports I agree with andy-hughes.
I reckon most people would react the same philtaz, but you'd hope nobody was there to witness as you'd no doubt be aware that you were crossing the line. When there's 30 odd thousand people watching, you jump on him and restrain him... although some may even say that's too much!
I thought the same daffy, two kicks nowhere near the head (on the legs mainly) and the gut cowered like the coward he is.

Bit off more than he could chew and suffered the consequences.
the video will start after the ad factor
the video at the bottom of the Mail link suggests daffy is right: despite the report claiming "a series of kicks" there were only two. (Typical Mail, you might think.) I would have thought that was well within the realms of self-defence.
Im not condoning the goalkeepers actions, but if he tried that on a Sunday pub teams goalie, I suspect the players from both teams would give him a good kicking

As I said on the other thread, goalie needs to work on his aim and volley technique.
As I said, he deserved everything he got. He picked on the biggest bloke on the pitch and was brought down to size.
Totally agree daffy.
If the goalie had gone down would the thug have calmly restrained himself? Deserved all he got and then some.
