And said that we're no longer capable of putting on a show, we'll embarrass ourselves as we're skint, etc etc etc....

Watch this and eat your sour grapes ;-)

hmm I fear you will start the "waste of money" debate..
> Watch this and eat your sour grapes

Mixing your metaphors a bit there... ;-)

The fireworks certainly were something to behold, though.

Probably cazzz, but I don't care.

I was specifically getting at those who said we can no longer put on a show, this proves beyond doubt that we can- and spectacularly too.

Thank you for correcting my grammatical faux pas, i'd have died of embarrassment otherwise...
that was a great show. As I recall they trimmed it back from 10 minutes to seven last year to save a couple of million, but this year it was up to 12. I didn't go as they were predicting rain (and it takes half an hour to get free of the Embankment crowd), but I saw it on the telly and enjoyed it.

MarkRae, I see only one metaphor there. "Watch" is not a metaphor.
I'm surprised no one mentioned the money aspect last night...

I think the London fireworks were the best.

Well I wouldn't call 'em idiots (not out loud anyway- lol), but I get so fed up of the doom bringers who just see the bad in EVERYTHING.

The Olympics, IMO, will be a spectacular boost to the UK, if only in moral.
"And said that we're no longer capable of putting on a show, we'll embarrass ourselves"

I've just done an AB search, and can't find any posts making such a claim. Who exactly is this post aimed at?
Damn them for stealing my idea of selling Britishness by celebrating our biggest USP - our world-beating music industry. If they use that soundtrack (or my better idea of staging a mini British 'Live Aid') during the opening ceremony, I'll sue.

Blinding show.

Well unless I imagined it rojash (distinct possibility!) I'm sure I read of grumblings of "meh, we still believe we're a great nation, we can no longer put on the shows like we used to" kind of posts whenever the Olympics were mentioned, as well as the obvious hand wringing "we simply can't afford it" twaddle.
'''''''''And said that we're no longer capable of putting on a show''''''''''

We didn't put on the firework show, the firework company did it!!!!!
Probably just as well, can you imagine Boris, a box of Swan Vesta and several hundred thousands (£) pounds of fireworks!!!!
well at least the money's not gone up in flames......

Did anyone else appreciate the irony of the 'official restaurant' being Macdonalds?
Hate fireworks, but they were spectacular - we put on the finest shows in the world noted for our pomp and ceremony - nobody does it better - as the song goes.
...at least they've kept B00 and a few whippets happy!

Zakly Brendan :-)

I realise I am setting aside the cost of the Olympics, which was the main argument against us holding them, that's not what my post was about. It was more of a "look, we can still do it when we try" kinda thing, of which im possibly stupidly quite proud of :-)

Sorry? Don't understand that? Are you suggesting that only me and a few dogs were chuffed as little meatballs over seeing the fireworks?
