By 2016 the Republicans may have decided to target the centrist vote again rather than the Tea Party fringe, and the Democrats will be looking for a successor, so that will be interesting. But in 2012 it will take a tsunami to dislodge the incumbent.

I have an interest, in that the possibility of one of them becoming the most powerful person on the planet, given what I have read in the American press (and I read a fair bit) it appears collectivley, if brains were gun powder and you lit a match not one of them would lose the top of their skulls.
At the moment the infighting between them is nasty, personal and missing the issues. A decent democracy needs a strong opposition and it doesn't appear that the Republicans are capable of finding a decent candidate
Even the pro right wing press in the US seems at a loss of who to endorse.
