that's what I'm getting at, andy: those "in danger of discovery". Pete Townshend seems to have fallen under that heading, turning himself in when his name came up in an investigation. But there's no indication that this guy was under suspicion in any way... but that's the sort of missing explanation I've been wondering about.

I'm not a fan of child porn and if I found some easily available, i must admit I too would have thought of informing the police - call me naive, and maybe I am.

Obviously, I now wouldn't dream of doing so.

When this man's computer is eventually examined will there not be a record of what he's been looking at? One short visit could be an accident, repeated visits would be something else entirely.

If you use Peer top Peer (P2P) file sharing networks, such as Limewire, uTorrent, BitTorrent, Morpheus etc. to download 'free' music or movies (which is primarily what the majority of users use sites such as these for) there is always the risk of downloading something you didn't expect, whether it be a virus or files of dodgy content.

Many of the files are split in to sections and/or compressed to save download times (.rar files for example) and can easily be renamed: the downloader has no idea whether the file downloaded is in fact what they were expecting or something else entirely: only once it has been downloaded and expanded on the user's computer can the true content be known.

exactly sandy, which is why it seems crazy for him to do this if he is guilty...but then he could just be stupid enough to think he they would accept his word and not look too deep...or that he could bluster his way out of it by blaming hackers etc

deleted stuff can be recovered by a pro so even if he though he had deleted his tracks and so was safe, they will find it...

i too really hope he was just a naive bloke trying to do the right thing

this is probably how these paedo rings distribute images to each other by uploading to a p2p network as an innoccuous file then emailing the link. The file is available for a certain time only before being withdrawn by the op.

this saves the risk of emailing attachments. Trouble is whoever d/loads the file will get whatever it contains - sounds like what happened to this guy.
