I think Chelmsford is good choice. When I was a student there it was a typical county market town but now it is indistinguishable from London so it has to be a city. The magnificent cathedral is known locally as 'The Saracens Head'.
Everyone I've spoken to from Chelmsford today have only been worried about the possibility of their council tax going up!
That said, I think both Chelmsford and Colchester are deserving of city status (although doing both at once may have looked like a little bit of bias towards Essex)
Mamya, take comfort in Notlob being the largest town in Europe, better than being just another minor city!
"and the largest TOWN is in lancashire called Bolton and the reason why it is not a town is simply because there is a motorway down the side o the parish church.
so it cant be turned into a cathedral" Quote from Wikianswers
rather them than tower hamlets, which is a borough in London, in case you weren't aware. I reckon had they got city status then London would have been more polarised than it is now.
Reason to put the rates up .Changing signs and letterheads .Im going in to town oops sorry the city .People born in 1952 should all be given 60,000 quid .
..is there some kind of kudos or warm glow of satisfaction to be gained from feeling you're at the hub of metropolitan activity rather than languishing in sleepy urbanity? - or are there practical advantages like being able to herd a flock of geese on good friday or something?
