Since the Government came to power there has been a huge decrease in the number of people deported compared to the previous Labour Government.

I must admit this surprised me. I had expected the figures to be higher. Why are the Government letting more people stay?

This is deportation of foreign prisoners.
There was no difficulty deporting this man . . .

Because we're all in this together?

The growth of the human rights lawyer industry, adept in screwing cash from the public purse under the guise of legitimate appeals against deportation has the whole thing tied in knots.
But you said that in 2010 there were 39,030 foreign nationals deported from within the UK, an increase of 3% from 2009. How does that work then? Were they all deported before the elections in May?

Thank you naomi, I should clarify

// In 2010 there were 39,030 foreign nationals removed from within the UK under immigration law—or departing under threat of such removal—an increase of 3% from 2009. //

// The Shadow Home Secretary, in her critique of the Government's record on organising the deportation of foreign national criminals, claimed that 700 fewer were deported from the UK this year, "compared to last". How did she come to this figure?
Comparing only the most recent quarter with the same time last year showed 359 fewer cases, while taking a full four-quarter comparison using the most recent statistics shows 770 fewer cases - even more than was claimed. //

The 39,000 refers to all deportations, and this question refers to criminals deported. Unless we are sending less foreign criminals to prison, which seems unlikely, we must be letting them stay here after their sentences.

Sorry for the confusion. If I could amend the question it should read

Why are the Government letting more foreign criminals stay?
Thanks Gromit. I'll digest it tomorrow. Got to go to bed now. Night.

Do not wish to upset anybody but "unfit for purpose" comes to mind.
It costs money to deport someone. Unfortunately this is one of the areas that have cut backs.
