Life for Weymouth and Portlanders will be hell this Summer that's why I think it's a shame this was destroyed before most of them would have even known it was there.

couldn't they have kept it in use as sheltered housing?
well as they say that no public money was used, why not? Folk have spent more money on sillier things....not that this wasn't very silly....
They could have photoshopped a sandcastle for less than £100.
Question Author
Just tax payers' money.
it was all for publicity so at least ttfn has done her bit by bringing it to the attention of the wider world, otherwise nobody would ever have noticed.
Thud indeed. What a pathetic reason to take it down. Perhaps they should drain the sea too.
talk about creating a sandstorm over something that is relatively trivial.

Look after the pennies ..., DT.
and then they can shell out for something, ttfn. There may be a wave of support for this.
I expect the outlay will be recouped durig the Olympics, it's the pulling it down that I have an issue with.
"The spokesman added that no public money had been used for the sandcastle and said: “LOCOG is a privately funded company and our budget is raised through ticket sales, merchandising and licensing.”"
Question Author
Prudie, as if the poor people of Weymouth had not enough to contend with over the damned Olympics.

My blood fair boiled when I heard this on Radio Solent.
ttfn your blood must boil very easily....
She's not going to be happy when she sees what they've done to her sandcastle.......

Question Author
woofgang - it does when I think of better ways to spend £5k, e.g.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julia%27s_House
/// Why build £5,000 Olympic sandcastle only to demolish it? ///

Why, did the expect it to stand for hundreds of years?
Question Author
btw woofgang, the LOCOG is not 'a privately funded company'.
Bournemouth Town Council have, apparently, issued a Press Release,

"There isn't a grain of truth to this story. It appears the Daily Mail have floundered on a mudpie over this.Their hacks evidently spent too much time in the local sand-bar."
