Only 61% of English respondants reported feeling pride in the cross of St George.

The figures in Wales and Scotland (for THEIR nation flags are much higher).

Could this be because the BNP and EDL have politicised the nation symbol of identity, and thereby altered its meaning?

Is there an equivalent of the BNP in Wales and England? Have they sullied their own flags by allowing them to be associated with right wing groups?

Why did we allow this to happen again (it took YEARS for the link between the Union Flag and the Nation Front to fade).

I've heard from a couple of sources on AB, that you cannot be black or Asian and call yourself English - is this another reason behind the fragmenting of our country? No matter how much one assimilates, no matter whether you wear the best M&S suit, drive a Ford and live in Surrey, some white Britons will always see you as (the BNP puts it) 'a resident alien (and I don't think the BNP were referring to ET at this point...)

What's the answer?

Well it looks as though these guys are good at flag tetoxification:

http://www.knights-of-st-george.co.uk/

To quote from their website:

"This is a celebration of the greatness of England and St George - not a display of prejudice against any party, religion or tradition. We have enjoyed the company of knights from various backgrounds and ethnic origins in previous years and will continue to welcome fellow knights who are happy and proud to live in our country, wherever they or their families may have originated. In short, no d1*kheads please. "

Love it! A shame the website is still under construction, but the principle sounds good to me.
Maybe I don't celebrate St.Georges Day in the same way as the Irish Celebrate St.Patricks Day but I am proud to be English just the same.
A few English Flags to be seen flying in Birmingham today

/// A few English Flags to be seen flying in Birmingham today ///

Blimey nobody told me there was an EDL meeting today.
And I find nothing toxic about the St. George cross, mine is flying, albeit a bit soggy at the moment.
Apparently some do not wish English patriots from having a family day march.

/// About 140 people took part in March for England on Sunday. They were met by about 400 anti-fascist protesters. ///

/// Matt Silva, from March for England, said "We had three young girls aged between eight and 13 hit by bottles and coke cans," ///

a vast difference between patriotic Brits waving he flag and grinning during days of national celebration (I like to refer to them as 'patriots') and...

What IS it in the EDL mindset that makes some members do the Nazi salute?

Isn't that just an insult to their OWN grandparents?

Almost as insulting a burning poppies some might say...
Maybe its because the Queen has hijacked the Union Flag. Since Dianas death the Union flag is displayed at Buckingham Palace when not in residence. Before it was the Standard flag. The monarchy is not universally accepted and like the BNP its detractors abhor the connection.

"St George wiped out a whole species" - which species? and he wasn't English, anyway, we've just adopted him!
Not again...the dragon species! Surely that was the joke intended by MadFerret. St George killed one - supposedly - and now there ain't any left!
I am surprised that no one has yet mentioned the toxifying effect of England football fans over the years. Sadly, when I see the flag, I think of fat, sweaty drunkards shouting "Engerland" and trashing foreign capitals. yes I know that is outdated, but it is an image held by plenty
I am very proud to be English. I do not consider myself particularly British. Oh and I am an athiest too!
sp1814

I wasn't talking about the EDL I was referring to the 'March for England' event.

But seeing that you brought it up about Nazi salutes, perhaps they are mocking their opponents., and judging by this youtube clip, any EDL or March for England (call them what you may) makes them all seem like a picnic in the park by comparison.

Ah, well yet another St George's day nearly over, and apologies if I have upset anyone, on such a prestigious day.

Wait till tomorrow and then we can start all over again, upsetting each other again. :0)
I dont know what could be done to detoxify it but i never think of 'england' when i see our flag.... for years its made me think of football, now it just reminds me of EDL.... sorry but im being honest... i see our flag and all i see is (mainly) grown men snarling and nazi saluting :(
sp #No matter how much one assimilates, no matter whether you wear the best M&S suit, drive a Ford and live in Surrey, some white Britons will always see you as (the BNP puts it) 'a resident alien . #

You are right sp1814 but being accepted as English requires something else ,it requires you to believe you are English and adopt English culture.
If you stand outside Finsbury Park mosque lapping up anti English rhetoric and cheer when a foreign team beats ENGLAND at football and cricket you will never be accepted as English . You obviously are not.
Quite simply if I go to France I will never be accepted as French no matter
how much try and when I walk down Slough high street I see hundreds of
mainly Asians who don't even try. Its got nothing to do with flags you have to feel it in your heart .
# What's the answer?# There isn't one ! In 300 years maybe ? As happened in America but even there most people are quick to claim their ancestor's heritage. .
Here on our tiny island the Scots and the Welsh hang on to their nationality so what chance have you when your roots are abroad.
look at government forms, or any for that matter, they say British Asian, White British, and so forth, so they differentiate, or categorise people no matter what.
Modeller, interesting comments, some i totally agree with.
Although sp wasn’t able to find the post, I think this may be it

“sp also says “How dare anyone dispute his Englishness” well I’m afraid to say I must dispute that fact, he may be British but he is not English, just the same as a white person of English parents, born in Mumbai would not be Indian, or likewise a white person born in Kingston would also not be Jamaican, Chris Eubank tried to take himself off as the perfect English gent, by dressing as the stereotype Englishman but that also did not make him English..”

You've just proved me point. What's the point of blacks and Asians even trying to assimilate, when there are those who simply won't accept them as being part of a unified culture?

Look at Ainsley Harriott, Chris Eubanks and remember that black Tory MP who was rejected by the Cheltenham Tory party. He was black, but was 'English' i acccent, outlook and ambition.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of blacks and Asians who are not accepted - we're NOT talking about those who "stand outside Finsbury Park mosque lapping up anti English rhetoric"

I don't know why you're bringing them into it - they are as representative of their culture as the BNP is of Write Briton.

We should be wary of assuming extremists represent anyone but themselves.

Blimey THECORBYLOON

How on earth did you manager that???

Seriously - how?

AOG...now do you see my point?
Question Author
My point is - why complain about multiculturialism and blacks/Asians not assimilating when you refuse to allow them to call themselves English?
