Perhaps we should take a page from Bermuda's book, and kick out all those that we don’t want?

But it's not as simple as that, is it?

Didn't this family in question miss the cut-off for permanent residence by a couple of years?

Also, is there clarity on why their visa isn't being renewed? Is it because the chap has lost his job?
This is a very strange story. I've now read it all the way through and apparently he had another job lined up, applied for a work permit and had it turned down.

Seems really unfair.

Hope he can be accommodated by the local council back in Hull and that he has enough (fortunately, tax-free) savings to cushion the blow.
I thought it was a 'British Overseas Territory'? Does that not mean that a British passport holder has indefinite right to remain?

Apparently not. I think residence status in the Islands is alongside that of say, Australia.

The Queen may be head of state, but that doesn't mean you can settle there unless you have key skills.
sp, as I said earlier, obtaining a work permit is hard. One will only be issued if the post cannot be filled by a local.
The only way you can live on the island if you are not a local is to have work permit, or savings of around a zillion £'s

Are you getting 'Muslims' mixed up with 'Extremists'?

Wow - its like I cannot post anything today without sounding patronising.
oh, ok thanks SP. Didnt work for Barry Manilow anyway, made his 'wife dissappear'.
@sp

are they not muslims then ?!
ok if it makes you feel better

racists who dicrimate against others based on the colour of their skin
Errr...no.

Not all extremists are Muslim and not all Muslims are extremists.

In 1987, did you believe all Irishmen were in the IRA, or held IRA sympathies?
God...I've just re-read my mail and should have written, "Only a tiny fraction of British Muslims are extremists".

But I'm derailing the debate here...
Yes.

/// Just a wild guess but would there be any Muslims on your list AOG? ///

I do not want your insulting and sarcastic comments MRS.

Just like the usual AnswerBank trolls, you are conveniently reading more into this than was intended.

You have asked me who these are that we should 'kick out', but without giving me time to explain, you had a wild guess that they would be Muslims.

This thread is about a British family being ejected from another country because they no longer have a job, and I suggest that Britain should take a leaf out of their book and eject immigrants who haven't a job or any means of support also.

Perhaps because this happens to be Bermuda's system of treating our families we should retaliate and do likewise, to their families?

And unless the jobless ex-Bermudians who we eject from these shores happen to have converted to the Muslim faith, no Muslims are involved, so you will now have to seek another excuse for your troll like actions.
according to this

Bermudans can get UK citizenship almost automatically; so you can't kick them out.

But the gist of this story is slightly different.

The dad had a job offer lined up, applied for a work permit and it was turned down.

I would absolutely not support a British government doing that because the UK government should not be interfering with the free movement of labour.

That would be the worst kind of 'big government / market administration' that went out of fashion in he 70s.

Now that is a surprise.

Then now is the time for it to be brought back into fashion.

I love a bit of retro.

The City wouldn't stand for it.

In fact, now come to think of it - I doubt the economy wouldn't be able to handle that kind of interventionalism (not sure if that's a real word, but let's stick with it).

Because of the number of young Eastern Europeans doing manual lab...

...blimey - just realized the time. Gotta get dinner out of the oven and dish up before Britain's Got Talent starts...so I'll paraphrase the rest of my post...

Blah blah blah...open markets...blah blah blah...minimum wage...blah blah blah...hard working Eastern Europeans....blah blah blah...something from The Guardian.

You get the gist.
Put simply Bermudian politicians are only thinking of their country whereas British politicians think only of themselves, their careers, their expenses, their final packages when they get the boot.
AOG - you are too funny for words
