What a tragedy of cross-cultural values in that a 17 year old wanting boyfriends and her Pakistani-heritage parents wanting her to marry. Then her father takes action and is accused, along with her mother, of murdering their daughter and dumping the body in Cumbria.

Alisha, her sister, blew the gaffe on them......

Any views on how to avert this and integrate Muslim values into our cultural heritage and minimise the risk of this happening again?

i have plenty of views, but no answer to this sort of crime. You are asking the impossible in many cases.

Yes -en10 is right. It's like asking "what can we do to prevent all child murders".

Such a huge, huge, huge question.

sp, I would jail the mother, father for life, no parole. There is no excuse anyone can give me for the truly despicable crime committed here.
This sort of behaviour is not conducive to modern day society, or indeed should never be part of any countries society. This is not an isolated case, there have been any number of young women murdered because of so called honour, and this should be stamped on with a very large legal boot. If you want to live here, abide by the damn rules or get out.

certainly the heaviest sentences possible, along with psychiatric review, one way of keeping them in longer......

there almost needs to be a declaration of rights for immigrant groups to respect when they come into this country, rights determined for the silent majority of the population and respecting the traditions, politics and democracy of the UK - and it doesn't stop there; along with schools and communities, there is a huge role for religious leaders to help educate their congregations and create a more liberal Muslimdom, one that is perhaps truer to what the Prophet intended.....however, that is utopian in concept.

Which book is that em - am interested. Admire her younger sister for what she did - probably knew the same was ready to happen to her if she did not obey. Just cannot understand the mindset of these people, bad enough to lose a child, but to murder them yourself is beyond comprehension.

it's about the subjugation of two women in Afghanistan, the wars in the last 30 years or so, and much more. Excellent read.
