I never agreed with the daft targets anyway. In many cases it resulted in patients being treated like cattle and symptoms being overlooked as staff were too busy keeping an eye on the clock.

2) The Tories, particularly Cameron, are right behind the NHS it is rags and scarmongers like the Guardian that try to portray otherwise.

It is not money that is the problem with the NHS, it is the way it is managed. Putting targets in though is not the answer as the NHS cannot guarantee the illness/accidents that wil. will not occurr.

I have been on my own before in casualty and it still takes 2 hours. The minumim wait is 2 hours, even if there is nothing to do they go and have lunch or read a book. Rule 1 of casualty is that no one will be seen inside of 2 hours. This is a function of the basic fact that they are public sector and they have a little bit of power, see my former rants on airports same thing.

You are deluded if you think all tories hate the NHS. That is simply not true and Cameron, even though I hate the man, certainly would never dispose of it or wreck it.

d9, unfortunatley you have a very valid point. Particularly at the minute many public sector departments are deliberatley sabotaging to prove a point about cuts and the fact some of them now have to work for a living and it is true my missus works for the NHS.

Having said that, not sure it is too true at the coal face in casualty. My eldest daughter is currently a doctor in a casualty ward, it is manic particularly at weekend. Perhaps if we started charging people for being drunk or fighting then we may start to get soemwhere. At the minute there is no consquence for them and we, th tx payer, picks up the bill.

youngmafbog that has been my thoughts for years, that there should be a drunk tank away from the main hospital, then the binge drinkers can be dumped there and once sober be made to pay a substantial fine. If they have money to get blotto most weekends, then they can damn well pay towards the cost of their recovery if they end up in A&E.

The Tories have been trying to change it since day 1. Its not as if they have saved any money or changed the working practices for the better. They realised Labour had got to grips with a very underfunded and unworkable system and had to put the boot in to try to prove they knew best. Maybe they realised the private health service was losing patients because of the new efficiences and had to create a more inferior NHS system. Tory ideology relies on having a two tiered system whether it applies to health, education or travel.

It was underfunded em10 but Gordon Brown put that right....maybe one of the better things he achieved.

The NHS needs major reform, it's bloated and in some areas overstaffed.
Sqad can explain much better i am sure. Maybe he agrees or not, but go into any hospital, and see staff wandering around, going for breaks, lunch, not checking on patients, chatting, talking on mobiles, lalalala.

it certainly isn't or wasn't. More money is piled into the NHS than almost anything in Britain. Better look at what the hoohah is over doctors and their pensions, they are threatening to strike. Yet their pay is good, and pension rights far in excess of what the private sector gets. GP don't generally work evenings, weekends, and have by and large a good deal. They are now cribbing that they will have to work longer for their money, tough sh1t

The NHS is a wonderful institution. Unfortunately though it has become bloated and inneficient, it would benefit from some private sector approaches. There are more clerks than beds F_F_S that cannot be right.
