In the same week the government is to spend £bns on upgrading our nuclear weapons comes the story that people will die because of the lack of NHS treatment. Why do they give the NHS such little priority?

Factor30- it's perfectly simple- in my opinion, you can never spend too much money on making the NHS excellent or on educating our young people- it's what our money ought to be spent on and I would happily have my taxes hiked a bit to enable more investment in both ( which I know is a minority view) but true none the less.

The NHS has money poured into it ad infinitum, has it made it cutting edge, the best in the world, no it hasn't. Waiting lists are long, staff are not always caring, kind folk. And quite frankly i have had bad treatment from uncaring staff, consultants, who shove you out the door long before you should go. Many people bounce back into hospital as they have not properly recovered. Don't get old as you won't find that your time in hospital is necessarily a good one. An article in the paper the other day from a nurse who has written a book on his experiences as a NHS employee makes for grim reading. Hike peoples taxes up by all means but i am not convinced that it would make the service better.

I agree that the NHS needs overhauling and a lot of the fat trimmed off it and streamlining to give everyone the best care possible, but you're not going to get that with either money or a hatchet job alone. We need to culture a more caring society with greater respect and equality and the basic fundamental idea that people and their care are the ones who matter. we've strayed a very long way away form that idea at the moment but even so I'm a big fan of the NHS, I think mostly it gets itr right but when it gets it wrong it's disasterous.

i struggled long and hard to get help for an elderly relative, NHS didn't come up with the goods, i nearly broke my own health doing it, same for another relative who has long term health issues. Sorry but i reckon that much of the problem is that is seems unregulated, and those that work in it can of course be caring professionals, but the ones i have had the misfortune to come across were a complete waste of time and money.

Yes, I would. I'm all for the NHS, and I've had good experiences and bad experiences with it. I don't think the NHS is given little priority. It has the money to do what it is supposed to do - but too much of it is squandered in the wrong areas.
