not only that Frances, the lead actor IS the writer :-)
Ummm, you've never seen an alcoholic priest?
Lol...I was thinking about Dougle and Ted. Everyone knows a father Jack ;-)
Father Ted portrays Irish Catholic priests as hard drinking, chain smoking men cocooned in their own world by the Church which in turn has its hierarchy and politics.
I find it very funny because it so absurd, but, yes, it does use stereotypes, including the 'thick Irishman'.
'suppose.
I live near Walsingham which on occasions is full of alchoholic irish priests (seriously!!) They have lock ins in the pubs. They are amongst the worst behaved at the pilgrimages ;o)
I never saw it but why but 3.6 million did watch it , 200 complained.
What % is that?

Easy answer for the complainers.....don't tune in next week.
Agree with most ABers on here. Citizen Khan was just not entertainment. Next week the viewing figures will be down to 5,999,999! I won't be watching.
Sorry, should have said 3,599,999!
BBC1 show was watched by 3.6million viewers
OOOOPS That went early,
I will be tuning next week to take it back to 3.6
Isn't this what 'inclusion' means? If we can have comedies about religions and sectors of society surely that should be ALL religions and sectors?
Well its written by a Muslim so that softens the blow somewhat!

The subject of most sitcoms can be construed as 'stereotypical'. Thats the formula. I'm sure most people living in East End of London dont identify with Eastenders being a true representation of who they are.

Its meant to be humourous.
hc3461 Like the Vicar of Dibley, or Rev perhaps ;o)

People just like complaining. My only complaint is that is was an absolutely dire non comedy so will never watch it again.

Now these two were funny, and I don't think their show offended anyone.

<and I don't think their show offended anyone>

You would know that would you?

from wiki

<This time, the NAACP mounted a formal protest almost as soon as the television version began>

Possibly because the heyday of Amos'n'Andy was as a radio show which was written and voiced by two white actors from the dire 'minstrel tradition' of white performers making fun of supposed black characteristics and mannerisms.

It's hard to believe, but the white radio witers and performers originally planned the tv version to be voiced by them in their 'c00n voices' with afro american actors lip-synching.
I only copy this as i thought that it was written by the star of the show, a Muslim, it's crime as far as i can see, it was unfunny.

The six-part series, which aired for the first time on BBC1 on Monday at 10.35pm, has been created by British Muslim Adil Ray, who also plays the lead role.
I gave ten minutes, can not see what is funny other than that black bloke is obviously work shy. ...... lol, :0/
will someone issue a Fatwa on the hapless actor, writer.
Hadn't laughed 10 minutes into it, gave up, went elsewhere.
