The legal age of consent in France is 15 and in Spain 14.

Obviously if he has kidnapped her then he should face the full force of the law, but it seems that the girl is very advanced for her age, and it is possible that they are both very much in love with each other, which is tragic because no good can come from it I'm afraid.

The similarity of her and his wife are remarkable - wit the photos in the Daily Telegraph yesterday.

He needs his sanity questioning - loss of job, wife and family, sex register and prison - and if he had waited until she left school, well what could they have done except register moral disgust (and the divorce etc).

Everybody seems to be assuming that he has 'done the deed'. Are we not adding 1+1 and ending up with 3. For all we know they made not have consumated their relationship in which case he would be facing a lesser charge than everyone is suggesting.

People exist on the run for years and in all but the most high cases often avoid detection. This is likely to be seen as a non event on the continent and there is plenty of casual work in France, Spain etc, so you never know.

It is apparent from the circumstances which are known - travelling to France - that this couple have not put any serious coherent thought into their actions.

If they are in a committed relationship and plan to be togehter, then taking a child abroad without parental consent and taking leave of absence from his teaching post are not the way to proceed.

The couple may well have been carried away on an emotional wave with the attendant daring and romance of going away together, but as the emotional impact ebbs and the practical considerations increase, it will dawn on them that they have to come home - and they will because they will have no choice.

Love does not live on fresh air - they need fuel, food, accomodation, income, and a plan for the future, and indications are they have few, if any of these essentials.

As to charges and so on, that will have to wait until the full circumstances are known, but this foolish man has certainly lost his career, and possibly his marriage through his actions, which do not indicate the workings of a mature and adult mind.

France is in the EU is it not? Well in that case won't their Government provide them with these things, because we have enough EU member citizens coming over here with nothing at all, and our Government provide for them.

When was working we had a similar situation - at first the girl and the teacher were in a relationship and then it ended (or got stopped). He then started stalking her and tried to abduct her. It all got very sinister and weird (bloke ws always a bit odd and the girl was a bit strange too). Things at work were very stressed for ages, with police and the pressing hanging about. Pretty sure he ended up in jail.
