Where is the outrage
Avfew months ago, there was (appropriate) outrage at the Rotherham 'child grooming' story, which saw a number of men, of Pakistani origin sent to jail for having sex with underage girls.
However, there seems to be a suspiciously large chasm of silence about THIS case

For five years, I volunteered at a 'big brother' community project, taking kids out of the city on trips to the seaside, and working with those with educational difficulties in maths (ha - that's a joke...only just passed my Maths O Level) and English.
I also sponsored gay teenagers who had been chucked out by their parents - I trained in counselling because a lot of these kids were very, very vulnerable.
Did that for five brilliant years, but a recent promotion at work forced me to stop, as I couldn't dedicate the time (have to do a lot of travel to Indua nd the US).
I believe my credentials are quite 'intact'.

Eccles, a teenage girl such as in this report is a victim of circumstance, one that society has failed.
A pre pubescent child victim of a paedophile is a victim of that paedophile.
So, sp, as you are so aware of what is happening in the world, why on earth are you comparing two very, very different cases?

sp1814 - I hadn't even seen this story until you mentioned it. Maybe that's part of the problem. No mention if it here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/
and it's hardly mentioned even here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/england/derbyshire/
I think that tells you something of the perceived relative merits of the two stories.

I refer you back to the Rochdale case.
The girls were the same ages - 13 to 15.
Also, they were vulnerable girls from care homes.
These cases are very much alike. You mentioned that the girls were prepubescent - you're 100% right, in that in both cases, the girls were not children, but we're in the stage of development before puberty.
Franky, I find it a little sick-making.
God only knows what a girl of 13 has to go through in order to sell herself 'for a ride on a tractor'.
It's just...unbelievable.

I really can't be arsed getting involved with the undercurrent running here.
I do have views on what an 'adult' relationship constitutes and am not happy with the arbitrary legal judgements on how adulthood is measured.
No, I wouldn't be happy if it was my daughter but I do not think she will suffer any long term harm.
Would the reporting be different if he/she had different skin colours...probably, but that kind if hysteria is to be expected in the tabloid press.

These cases are nothing alike.
In the Rochdale cases the girls were groomed for weeks and months. Usually the girls believed themselves to be in love with their 'boyfriend' who then passed them round to other men.
In this case, most of the girls were selling themselves. No grooming. No declarations of love and affection. No 'if you loved me you'd have sex with my mate'. No getting the girls hooked on to drugs. No long term plan.
For a grown man or woman to have sex with an under age child is wrong. There is no doubt in my mind about that.
I have no illusions, though. I know that some under age girls and boys sell themselves and as the law does not allow such children to be locked up for their own protection then adults who take advantage must be punished.
But I still stand by my statement. There is a huge difference between a group of men that collude to groom children for sex with most or all of them and individual men that pick up children who are selling themselves for sex.
The groomers are the cause of the offences in Rochdale.
The backgrounds of the girls are cause of those girls selling themselves in this case and the men are very guilty of taking advantage.

I am getting a little sick and tired of some of you forever bringing my name into threads such as this, that in my opinion have been created just to cause such trouble.
It is interesting to point out that the trolls who are stirring the trouble up here are the very ones that could not even be bothered to contribute to what is after all a much serious problem.

These accusations by the Times newspaper of a cover-up by the police and the local authorities, would be broadcast all over the media if they did not involve sensitive issues among certain communities.
These revelations didn't come to light from what some call the 'Daily Wail' in actual fact the Daily Mail was until just recently also backward in reporting on this.
While the whole of the British media conduct a wall to wall headline coverage of a Teacher and his pupil absconding to France, there has not been one mention of this cover-up.

"I'm actually pleased that there's been at least a little low-level outrage at this story.

only because you forced the issue, even though it was pointed out to you more than once in no uncertain terms how different the cases were.
The amount of squirming and wriggling by yourself leads me to believe we have discovered a new species of worm.
