7 in 10 shoppers back charging for plastic bags, can this be true, what do ABers think?

I can never understand if they are so worried about the environment why they don't issue Biodegradable bags.

I have noticed however that on my visits to supermarkets, I have noticed that it is generally the more mature shopper who take along their own bags, whist younger shoppers tend to take up the supermarkets plastic ones, why is this?

I always take my bag for life - because she pays !

My daughter works on a till in Waitrose and apparently this little Gem is repeated over and over. she wold like an end to bags for life if only not to hear this again.

Personally I keep some in the truck, not a problem. I do like to wrap meat in separate disposable if only for hygene purposes though. One thing that really bucgs me is the plastic bags for veg, what is wrong with paper (I know in this country paper for the main bag is useless given the climate).

I think the 70% is about right - there are times when I forget my bags - just back from Spain where they charge 2p for a bag.

I have made my own small rebellion against bags for fruit and veg, I just put my bananas etc in the trolley. They have their own wrapping, they don't need a bag.

i have a trolley and anice large jute bag for shopping - and i'm (only) 36! i don't use carrier bags as they are horrible things and also not trendy x

We are already charged 5p per bag in Wales and have been for some time now. i have bags for life and use them every time I go shopping. The WAG reckon the system is working and there a lot less plastic bags being used.

Funny thing that, there is also some snob value in store's bags, people tend to go for Sainsburys or Waitrose for some reason.

Regarding the working younger person, they mainly travel to their supermarket in their cars, so what is wrong with them keeping their shopping bags in the boot of their cars?

And whatever happened to those giant bags, which had four hooks that fitted inside the shopping trolley?

And for the more elderly amongst us, can you remember the tough brown paper carriers that had string handles? I bet your fingers remember them, especially when one walked (yes walked) home from the shops, with one of these bags ladened with goods and the string digging into one's fingers.

We re-use our supermarket bags to put in our bins. Without them we would have to buy a roll of bags which would do the same job but not cut back on their use.

I'm not bothered about a charge being made if it helps the environment. I always recycle and use carrier bags for bin liners. I also use Asda's big green shoppers until they wear out. I'm not elderly !

We have a friend who is local secretary of friends of the earth. He and his wife never take shopping bags with them when thay go shopping, Additionally they never use the local bus service and don't do any recycling. Words are much easier than actions...

My brother lives in Wales and so like Welshyorkie he has been paying 5p for plastic bags for a very long time. Well, actually he doesn't pay because it makes him remember to take his bags for life when he goes shopping. Personally I take a push-along shopping trolley and put my goods directly in but I also have a large collection of bags for life if I need them. Having to pay certainly makes you remember to take them.

We see far fewer plastic bags in the hedgerows in Wales since a charge was introduced. I also saved my old ones but the stock is reducing because every time I take plants or potted cuttings to friends I use them. I never have the courage to ask for them back :o). Where I live we have to pay 50p for a biodegradable bag to put garden waste in - this is the only way the council will take garden waste. But these bags are hopeless because they split every time. Now we have to put a 50p biodegradable bag inside a plastic bag and leave the plastic open so that the binmen can see the biodegradable bag. This 'twobags' is insanity if we are considering saving the planet! ( But it brings in extra cash for the council.)

One thing puzzles me, we are encouraged to recycle carrier bags which I always do in the home, caravan and garden (see my earlier answer) but if I use them in my pedal bin, they will still end up in land-fill surely? Also the poster who uses them for doggie mess still disposes of them in a rubbish bin ................ the only way would be to ban all plastic bags of any kind, but I really would be in a mess then ........

Yuk, don't people that use them to pick up their dog's mess realise they've got breather holes in them. I hope they've got their specs on and are paying attention when they're doing it.
I recycle mine once by putting my rubbish in them but Waitrose deliver my shopping at a ratio of about 2 items to 1 bag.
