Charging for roads by mileage
Maybe a good idea but how will people afford to pay 1.00 per mile every day. Will the charging coincide with reduction in fuel duty and abolishing the road tax. Or will mileage payment start and the others withdrawn in the next financial year (a la Gordon Browns Married Couples Allowance scam) so that you are effectively paying twice for a short time.

To get to nice places to walk in more often than not you have to go by car!! I do my fair share of walking (large dog) and am not obese or a burden on the NHS which is great by the way.
But,much as I like walking I cannot walk seven miles to my local supermarket because there is no public transport and my local High Street consists of charity shops ,building societies and estate agents none of whom sell food. Perhaps I should purchase a horse and cart. And ...if you think they will lower the price of fuel you must be living on another planet !.

I'm disabled and have to drive virtually everywhere. I usually have to drive on the M25 etc. around London, and usually during rush hour. I worked out it'll cost me 60 PER DAY to work - and the government is trying to get people like me back to work?!
I would prefer toll roads personally - at least I can chose whether to avoid them or not. In America, they often have a toll lane - like a fast lane that you can only use if you pay extra. They also have carpool lanes. I know that's probably not practical here, (our roads are too narrow), but it makes more sense to me than this does.
