1 in 4 of the world's prisoners is in the US and it's costing them a small fortune - actually that's not true it's costing them a large fortune!
Yes this is a nasty case of child abuse but we're not talking murder here - I can't see any need to imprison her to protect the public I can't see how this acts as a deterrant - people in that circumstance are not rational.
I note that the judge doubled even what the prosecuters were asking for!
I suggest you go and live in Texas YMB - they sound like your sort of people!

When have lefty liberals (or rabid right-wingers) decided sentences in this country, ymb? And what, pray, would your sentence be on an even more serious offence of gbh than this? 150 years? (The maximum for s18 gbh here is life imprisonment). And what sentence would you have imposed on this defendant?
I have to work the them daily Jake. You're right, they are my kinda people. I disagree that public protection is not being afforded. If she can do that to her own child I'm pretty sure given the right circumstance she would do it to another. Yes, perhaps 99 years is a bit harsh, the 45 the prosecutor was after would be more appropriate.
jno, not quite sure I follow your post?

Well of course you don't
You've after all studied the pychiatric reports, sat throughseveral days of testamony - just like I have!
We are both making judgement based on very limited data but one thing is clear when a judge doubles the sentence a prosecutor asks for questions should be asked whether the judge is making sentencing decisions properly based on precident or baesd on some emotional reaction.
It precisely because of cases like this that we have sentencing guidelines that judges are meant to stick to
