No Dame-hood for this brave lass, not even a mention in the celebrity obituaries, and it was not until May 2010 that she received an award from David Cameron.

/// She also received a Bletchley Park Badge and The Freedom of Bletchley Park in the post, along with a letter from David Cameron thanking her for her 'vital service', after she was nominated for the top honour by a historian ///

i had never heard of sigrid green til' i read that, she did so much for the country, lets hope she has a proper memorial, may she now rest in peace.
A true hero (heroine).
A truly extraordinary courageous and inspirational woman. Thanks for posting that, AOG
These people did as much to protect the freedom of the UK in the Second World War as "the few", IMO yet, with the possible exception of Alan Turing, no-one has heard of any of them.

The main reason for this was that Turing was gay - surely we're past that now...?

They are all national heroes, every bit the equal of Wellington, Nelson, Montgomery and Churchill.
Isn't it sad that pretty much no one's heard of this wonderful lady, myself included, yet could point to a picture of this woman...

An know instantly who it is?

(Used Imogen as an example, don't particular dislike her, but famous for bonking football stars? Please!)
It is truly sad that not everyone know what this lady and many more did to protect the future generations.

My husband and i were very lucky to make friends with an elderly lady in our village we knew her for 20+ years it was not until she was dying that we knew she worked at Bletchley - we knew she was a highly intelligent woman and we knew she worked with the first computers but for whatever reason she decided to keep it secret.

So to Sigrid, Imogen and Julie - Bless you all and thank you
Just what I was thinking, B00. So sad that so many girls have little aspiration beyond becoming a WAG
> but for whatever reason she decided to keep it secret.

Depending on when you knew her, she may have still been bound by the Official Secrets Act...
Mark she died 3 years ago.

I am fully aware of the secrets act.

"Even 70 years later, some people still regard themselves bound to remain silent."
What a story - so many unsung heroes/heroines we will probably never hear of. RIP to each and every one of you.
many women like her, in every walk of life, unsung probably because of the nature of the work they did. I think that they should be honoured in every way possible. it's posthumous but without many of these selfless brave people we wouldn't be here today.

Not sure about you, but for many people the reason why Alan Turing's name is well known is because of the way the establishment treated him after he was convicted for gross indecency with another man (not the kind of 'gross indency' we have now, where you have to be witnessed outside for example).

He was chemically castrated by the government of the country he loved (played a significant part in saving in WWII) and then committed suicide in his early 40s.

I think that this is why he's well known...not 'just' because he was gay.

O'dear lol

To be honest, I have never heard of her but she was obviously a very brave woman. RIP Sigrid.
By the way...a little food for thought.

The story in the link was posted this morning and has had 25 comments posted on the Daily Mail website.

Since then, the site has publish four stories about Kim Kardashian - centring on her wearing something, wearing something else and two separate stories about her being at the same restaurant as her ex.

These have garnered 876 responses as at 19:17 today.
That's going back to my Imogen Thomas thing up there Sp ^
AOG. I would know nothing of this remarkable lady had you not posted. Thank you.
Well done AOG for posting this. B00 - I had no idea who Imogen Thomas is - but having googled her, that's no loss.
Absolute Hero to all of us, raise my wee tartan bunnit to her.

RIP

Nessie
