A 66ft bronze statue of a naked heavily pregnant woman, with half of it showing 'her' insides

I'd be embarrassed if this was in my town, it's an eyesore

Why do 'artists' feel the need to produce monstrosities that shock?

Whatever happened to quality bronzes of famous people erected in the towns where they were born?

I was born in same town as Stan Laurel and there is a bronze statue of him and Oliver Hardy in the town centre, it is a focal point of the town.

When I visited Brussels I bought my Dad a Whisky decanter of the Mannequin Pis. I was only 19, that was and is my excuse.
I like it

This sort of Art isn't meant to be just some bland attractive thing to make a town look "nice"

It's not meant to be some sort of unobtrusive civic wallpaper to add to the general ambience

It's meant to make you think

About the sword and the scales behind the back, about the ugliness underneath the skin and about the title

I have no idea why it's going to Ilfracombe of all places though, we should find a place for it outside the Old Bailey
^ or Whitechapel as a sort of Jack the ripper tribute?
I like it.
Actually Jake's suggestion is pretty good. It would certainly make more sense as an alternative old bailey statue.
We have a huge statue of William of Orange that dominates the market square in a town not far from us.

I'm sure many a catholic Irishman would prefer the statue in Joes link!
I personally think she's beautiful, not usually a fan of Hurst, but in this instance I am. He lives locally, has businesses there and is clearly trying to do something positive for the town, the fact that some of 'em don't like it is irrelevant really, they'll be happy enough to take the visitor's money when they come.
Joeluke was born in the same town as Stan Laurel...
Are they related, NOX? - if so then Ulverston needs to erect a statue of joeluke in honour of his AB wit.
A Hirst/Pangolin Editions foundry co-production might be more accurate.

Credit where it's due.

Seems to be more of the usual from Damo though.
I think it's horrendous (I don't find pregnant bellies attractive in any form)

I cannot understand today's obsession with the pregnant woman image.

One sees enough on any high street or supermarket of naked pregnant bellies overhanging tight jeans, and even in the present TV Soaps, there are and have been numerous actresses walking around continuously rubbing their 'Baby Bumps', and then of course there are the pregnant 'Celebrities' who cannot wait to get in front of the cameras.

Much more pleasing to see a modest pregnant lady discreetly covering up her baby bump under a nice loosely fitting maternity smock.
I'm starting to like it more. It looks ok in those Daily Mail pictures, but it would still be better with all the skin in place.

Hidden - in other words.

in favour of Burkhas for pregnant people then aog?

Why are people so repressed about babies, childbirth, pregnancy and the human body?
no i wouldn't, but then we are stuck with The Shard, one man's vanity project
and having seen a photo of it, bits and all i can't say i care for it, no matter it's meaning.

/// Hidden - in other words. ///

No hidden in 'YOUR' words ///

When a woman wears attractive maternity wear every one knows she is pregnant without the need for her to show more of her anatomy.

/// in favour of Burkhas for pregnant people then aog? ///

Why would a pregnant woman or any woman for that matter, wish to cover themselves up from head to toe?

/// Why are people so repressed about babies, childbirth, pregnancy and the human body? ///

Just because I object to seeing unnecessary volumes of naked flesh, doesn't mean I am repressed about babies, childbirth, pregnancy, and the human body as you put it.

In a civilised society, some things are more discreetly covered, for example would you consider it appropriate for a person who wanted to show off their physique, to stroll down the high street in the all together?
if it was in a gallery then fine
"In a civilised society, some things are more discreetly covered" do you mean like these great works of art?

Hermes and The Infant Dionysus
The Discus Thrower
The Thinker

DT.....Hartleys was bought by Robinsons of Stockport in the early eighties, brewing ceased in Ulverston in the early nineties, used to go to school near the old brewery

Never liked the stuff myself

Kendal eh? Went to KCFE for 2 years after leaving school
<covering up>

YOUR words aog

cover up: noun. a device or stratagem for masking or concealing

concealing = hiding

BTW I didn't say you were repressed but you seem to have inferred that so it clearly touched a nerve

<I object to seeing unnecessary volumes of naked flesh, doesn't mean I am repressed>

Yes, that's what all repressed people say.

'volumes'?
'flesh'?
'unnecessary' what would be a necessary amount?

Boy, you do have issues don't you? LOL

<would you consider it appropriate for a person who wanted to show off their physique, to stroll down the high street in the all together?>

The High Street may be inappropriate but the beach is fine - isn't this statue at the beach?
