It would now seem that our children are no longer safe walking home from school these days.
This brutal savage sex attack, comes close on the heels of the death of a 85 year old woman, who was knocked to the ground and killed, by two young muggers snatching her bag.

I don't know how old you are, but please give me the benefit of knowing about the past, than those who have only read about it.
We are constantly told that we hear more about such crime these days than we did yesteryear, but that is completely wrong, we may not have had TV but we certainly had radio and newspapers.
With all the media we have today there are many crimes that just do not get reported because they are so numerous, and most of those that do never make the headlines.
Remember we had capital punishment back then, Albert Pierrepoint was the state hangman, and in his 24-year career he executed only 435 people, that was approx.18 per year.
In the year 2010/11 there were 648 murders recorded with 636 confirmed in England & Wales alone.
Had we still capital punishment, they would need the services of more than our Mr Pierrepoint to dispatch those numbers.

@AoG - No, your views do not get a free pass because you experienced the past. Memory is faulty, recall imperfect, and our subjective opinions are compromised by bias.
And as you rightly point out, you have no idea how old I am. Did I tell you my middle name? Its Lazarus ;)
You attempt to dismiss the media, the fact that we have 24/7 global coverage, but it is wrong to do so. Headlines inform our perceptions, as any news editor will tell you.
When Pierrepoint was hangman he only hanged around 18 per year is I think what you claim. I havent checked the figures - but are you trying to claim that therefore there were only 18 murders a year during his time in post? Evidence please.
You cannot view crime in isolation either. You have to take into account exponentially larger populations, the development of huge conurbations, and the much more mobile population.
I simply do not accept your proposition that the world is getting worse every day.

Glad you pointed the Heath murders out Jack, he has gone down in history, yet today his crimes would have most likely have been forgotten just a few months after conviction.
Can't understand why you posted that link though, it had nothing to do with the blackout, these were women he had met before, and wined and dined them.
He was only convicted of one murder, although suspected of two and consequently like most murders in those days he was hanged.

/// So why don't you show the courage of your convictions AOG and give the answer to your very own question? ///
I don't usually reply to demands, especially to one who's sole purpose is to be confrontational, but just this once I will make an exception.
I would have thought that the answer to my question was self explanatory, by the inclusion of the three reports I provided.
But really isn't this site called Answerbank, and it's sole purpose is for some to ask a question so as for others to answer?
Think about it, it's not hard.

One of the most notorious murder cases took place during a week in February 1942. On 9th February, Evelyn Hamilton, was found in an air raid shelter in Marylebone. She had been strangled and her handbag had been stolen. The following day the body of Evelyn Oatley was found in her Wardour Street flat. She had been strangled and mutilated with a tin-opener. Three days later Margaret Lowe was also found strangled and mutilated. On 12th February, a fourth woman, Doris Jouannet, was also found killed in the same way. The newspapers now described the killer as the Blackout Ripper.
Soon after the body of Doris Jourannet was found, the killer attacked a fifth woman. He was disturbed by a delivery boy and the man ran off. He left behind his Gas Mask case. Inside was a service number that identified it as belonging to Gordon Cummings, a twenty-eight year cadet in the RAF. Although he did not have a criminal record or have a history of violence, the evidence against Cummings was overwhelming. His fingerprints were found in two of the flats where the killings took place. He was also found in possession of objects stolen from the women.

<<Even in the days of the WW2 blackouts, women and girls were safe to walk home alone, but today's sexual predators do not even wait for the hours of darkness to commit their brutal sex attacks, they even strike during the hours of daylight. >>
<<No such visions comes from living long enough to be able to make comparisons>>
So you aren't actually comparing 2012 with any other previous time?

It was a demand AOG, it was a request.

I would have thought that the answer to my question was self explanatory, by the inclusion of the three reports I provided.
Well no it isn't self explanatory is it? ...or else my first two posts would not have been removed.
Instead of cryptic clues and subliminal messages why not just spit it out?

Seriously !?!!?
What an insanely lazy thing to say - Took me all of 2 seconds to find this

The blackout ripper!
He was a Leading aircraftman in the Royal Air Force where he was nicknamed The Count because of his claims to have noble heritage
Over six days in February 1942, Cummins took advantage of London's night-time blackout conditions to murder four women and attempt to murder two others.[1] He mutilated the bodies of three of his victims.[2]
Yeah really safe walking home in the Blackout!

anotheoldgit, the figures for Pierrepoint you gave include those hanged outwith England and Wales (such as war criminals) and in which he assisted. He hanged 138 civilians and fourteen men were hanged for treason or espionage. He was not the only executioner during his time and not every murder/ess was hanged so his "average" does not relate to the actual murder statistics.
By the way, the latest figures for 2011/12 show the lowest homicide rate in England and Wales for almost thirty years
