I've heard of 'having a whip-round' but this is ridiculous, don't you think?

Not in the least bit ridiculous. If only our local Christian clergy showed half as much devotion.
The 'devout' in many religions do things that outsiders consider to be odd....this is just one of them.
And here's equally graphic images of Christians doing the same thing

Apparently Pope JP II se to do it too!

Do you think anyone should mention the possibility to her Maj as hed of the CoE?
Jake-the-Peg, she's a bit long in the tooth for that kind of carry on. Now, Camilla could take a horse whip to Charles when he mounts the throne.
One of the more extreme, JtH. :)

In my opinion it is a ridiculously extreme ceremony - at the far end of the silly rituals that religions carry out to show their devotions. Self- flagellation is not exclusive to the Muslims religion though- examples can be found elsewhere. Opus Dei, one of the more conservative catholic sects also self -flagellate.

Intelligent, I bet Allah is thinking " Stupid sods"
Seems like '50 Shades of Grey' doesn't translate well from English........

I bet Allah doesn't even know Answerbank exists
Madmen all.
Not in the least ridiculous, if that's what they believe. It happens every year.

As per my 'What is happening to England' you are so predictable with your comparisons and diversions.

In this case, criticise Christians, the Church of England, The Pope, or even make disgusting suggestions regarding members of the Royal Family, but please do not criticise Muslims.
Idiots. Then why are they nursing their self inflicted wounds.
What is there to criticise them about?!?

The self-flagellation seems bizarre, but they are undertaking themselves as part of their devotions.

Similarly, I don't criticise the Filipinos for their Christian excesses, either.
Religion!! God help us!!
Well the Phillipino's knock the shi'ite muslims into a cocked hat for self mutilation!

Volunteers are actually nailed to crosses at Easter

From the good old DM

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2126024/Christians-NAILED-crosses-gruesome-Good-Friday-enactment-Jesuss-death-Philippines.html

and yes the pictures are graphic!

I do't think even the Shi'ites go that far - but (Unlike some) I'm always ready to change an opinion if someone comes up with convincing data!
Jake, that link has already been posted on this thread.

I can't understand anyone defending any of it - even by effectively saying 'well this is not as bad as that.' They're all nuts!
At least the idiots are hurting themselves and not anybody else. But surely to pay respects to somebody, good deeds could be done instead ?
Where these sorts of things are in other religions as well, I do not believe that this one has anything to do with Islam as a religion. It is Shiaism. I know the differences between Shia and Sunni has been exploited by invading forces in recent times but these differences have been there for centuries and this the main reason of the differences. Islam does not believe in self harm.
