What Savile did was representative of British culture at the time. That girls did not report or, if they did were not believed, or it was dismissed as of no great significance, just one of those things, and it was subject to law that required corroboration, an element never required in any other assault, all points to a society which was different then from now. As different from then as the society before which held that a woman lost all right to her property on marriage and could not vote. Those societies are not so very far away in time from the present.
No doubt the reason why India has so few rapes compared to Britain is not that rapes are not frequent there but that complaints, prosecutions and convictions are rare. That any have received such wide publicity and such fervent response is, at least, a promising sign.
