Have The Coe Cocked It Up?
37 Answers
Just heard on the BBC News that the CoEngland are to allow gay bishops....
if they remain celibate and renounce their past activities.
Now isn't that an exercise in redundancy, hypocrisy whatever and shows the CoE to be as progressive and in touch as they are with the appointment of female Bishops?
What a cock-up to borrow the expression......

The Roman Catholic Church's insistance on celibacy has allowed priesthood to become a mask for all sorts of sexual abuse. This is just the same attitude, but from a different angle. And of course a bishop has so much more power than an ordinary priest.
I am as confused as lcg and have the same thoughts as rojash. Let me see if I have it right:
The C of E will now allow homosexual men to become bishops. As far as I know, homosexuality is against the teachings of Christianity.
The C of E will not allow women (of any sexual persuasion) to become bishops. As far as I know being female is not against the teachings of Christianity.
The notion that they will allow those in Civil Partnerships to become bishops provided they remain celibate (and renounce their earlier "sins") is absolutely laughable. What do they think those men will do? Say to their partners “Well sorry, that’s it for the naughties, I’m stepping up to Bishop next week. And by the way, I'm dreadfully regretful about all our earlier sinful activities!!”
Indeed, you could not make it up. How anybody (women or gay men in particular) could become involved with such a ludicrous organisation defies belief.

//naomi - though your logic is impeccable, why then permit the appointments if it goes against their "scripts" - that reeks of hypocrisy?//
I imagine from their point of view they are offering forgiveness in exchange for repentance - which is what the church trades on. It would only be hypocritical if they accepted gay bishops and ignored their lifestyle.
