Allow the police to use their wired cattle prods on the public and you send a message for an escalation of the arms race. Apparently it's ok to shock folk. It's just the power under discussion. Once the damage is done putting the cork back in the bottle is difficult. Just one more thing to deal with then, preventing their spread would be like telling the tide to stop coming in. But as you say if, that's if, they substitute for rather than add to the growing gun issue then it's not quite so bad. After all when tasers were introduced in the US the police were to use them instead of shooting their gun, so they would never use them on someone who wouldn't in times past need shooting with a real firearm, would they.

The defenders of the right to bear arms in the US are already suggesting that hammers are more dangerous than rifles, so I would not be surprised to see them trying to ban hammers ;)

It is a real surprise that illegal objects seem to easy to acquire via online sales. Does sound like some tightening up is required....
