why shouldn't coppers start on the same wage as nurses, prison officers etc.? now all they have to do is cut the wages of social workers to the same (it's not like they actually do anything anyway, right?) x

I assumed the plan for policeman was for new constables to bring the starting salary in line with other jobs deemed to be equivalent. Are you saying existing PCs will also get their salary cut? If so, do you have a link please?

Historically Police officers have beeen paid a little more than other public sector workers in acknowledgement of the fact that the job is dangerous, involves dealing with unbelievable Muckenscheidt and necessitates extremely anti-social hours. Also, and importantly, the right to strike is not extended to Police.
Methinks that may change whether the government wants it to or not.
Short sighted beyond belief IMO.

I can perhaps sympathise with the sentiment, bayboy, but MPs have not and are unable to vote themselves a 30% pay rise - they are capped at 1% as other civil servants, for at least 2 years.

They did have a poll however where a significant proportion of them indicated they thought they were worth significantly more than they are currently paid... poll will not effect any actual pay rise though
