Immigration is not always a good thing for the UK, as some would have us believe.

/// Half of all crime committed in Britain by foreign nationals takes place in London. ///

IMMIGRANT ARRESTS IN NUMBERS

27,725 Romanian nationals were arrested in connection with:

142 rapes
10 murders
666 sex crimes
303 robberies
1,370 burglaries
2,902 acts of violence

Number of Romanians in jail:

September 2011: 454
Last year: 624

/For black Britons this is significantly higher than the 2% of the general population they represent./

Why relate the prison population to the overall population

The overwhelming majority of the prison population comes from the lowest socio-demographic groups in British society

What percentage of them is 'black' do you think?

Clue: it's more than 2%
I do wonder sometimes, what percentage of the prison population is working class. Is it under represented? And are upper-middles over represented? What percentage was unemployed at the time of the offence? What percentage are under 30?

I suspect that such analysis would be of more value than one simply of colour. and that the most likely to be in jail are those who fit certain age, income, employment, criteria. It may be that more blacks fit those criteria, as a percentage of the population overall, than whites or Asians
Someone's going to pull up the "ex-servicemen in jail figures" any minute now.

I can feel it...

/// Most burglaries, most murders, most sex crimes, most assaults, are committed single- handed; they are not joint enterprises. ///

Most maybe but not all, take gang killings, gang sex crimes, gang assaults not to mention the riots and looting.

And how many people have been arrested over the Saville affair?

Any chance of an explanation regarding your 4,023 figure?

4,023, aog? Yes, if it's wrong,I was using the wrong back of an envelope. Now what is 142+10+666+303 +2,902 ? Well,I never! Same answer. I don't count burglaries as acts of violence or sex crimes. Aggravated burglary isn't a crime of violence either, in case you wish to get technical
/take gang killings, gang sex crimes, gang assaults not to mention the riots and looting. /

what a thrilling little world some people choose to think about (a lot)

I've said it before; you'll stop dreaming about the big, muscular black men coming for you if you don't have cheese just before bedtime.

OK here are some figures from Shepton Mallet American Military prison during World War II, but I'm afraid you will not like them.

/// 18 military executions were carried out at Shepton Mallet, representing 26% of the 70 executions of American servicemen serving in the European Theatre of Operations (ETO). (Figures of 19 and even 21 executions in the UK have been given in some accounts but are definitely not correct.) Of these 18 men, nine were convicted of murder, six of rape and three of both crimes. Their racial mix was : ten African American, three Latino and five white ///

/OK here are some figures from Shepton Mallet American Military prison during World War II/

Well that's very relevant isn't it?

- a military regime that was openly segregated and racist
- from a nation that would continue to abuse, murder and falsely convict its black population with impunity for another 20-odd years

If that rubbish is the best you can add to the debate aog you should be ashamed
anotheoldgit, seriously, what ARE you rambling on about?
Dear me,aog. Have you noticed that the arrests over the Savile affair are one per offence, and some have been arrested for several offences committed by them alone? Yes, no doubt some recorded assaults and rapes are joint enterprises, I don't deny it. Doesn't alter the overall picture though, does it? How would the police be arresting an average of 5 Romanians per offence? One man may commit several burglaries or robberies etc; they often do, giving rise to one arrest for several offences. This is particularly common in burglaries, where one piece of evidence, such as fingerprint or boot mark, ls found replicated in several and finally it is associated with one man. What does that do to your average of 5 a crime? It makes no sense. I suspect that there have been many arrests but not just "in connection with" the crimes listed. Some were but many were not; that's the most obvious explanation consistent with experience

You are adding the 303 robberies which are not always acts of violence.

It's no more irrelevant than sp's post who started it all, didn't notice you criticizing him though, I wonder why?
Stop digging aog

You're busted
Robbery is not always an act of violence, aog? LOL. How are you defining act of violence? If your definition is that somebody must be hit, then assault itself is not aways an act of violence !

"A person is guilty of robbery if he steals , and immediately before or at the time of doing so, he uses force on any person or puts or seeks to put any person in fear of being then and there subjected to force" Theft Act 1968 s. 8(1)

I think that fits 'crime of violence' and 'act of violence', don't you? One thing's certain. The record of robbery will not in itself, state which particular elements were alleged.

anotheoldgit, what is the connexion between Romanians arrested in London over the past five years and executed American soldiers from seventy years ago?

*** Someone's going to pull up the "ex-servicemen in jail figures" any minute now. ***

Never could resist a challenge.
I think it would have helped if the report showed how many of the arrest included theft offences, such as fraud and theft from the person (without violence).
Good point,Orderlimit. The list excludes all theft offences except burglary and robbery and all frauds. There must be a great many thefts in a year, but Romanians are never arrested for them ! And they don't get arrested for a lot of other offences; making false statements to obtain entry, drink-drive,dangerous driving, false accounting, blackmail, handling stolen goods, going equipped to steal, having offensive weapon, forgery, money laundering, public nuisance, firearms offences and conspiracy to commit the above, among others.

Or is the figure only for those arrested for crimes in the given categories, and the reality is that thousands more are arrested for other offences but the Daily Mail was too shy to tell us?
Unless I'm mistaken, anotheoldgit, I think the reference to ex-servicemen in gaol relates to those alive and in custody in HMP and not those executed by a foreign nation seventy years ago in a gaol run by that foreign nation.
Fred, the way I read it is that 27k were arrested in London over the past five years which include the offences listed (i think)
