That area of Leicester has always been crime ridden. I definitely used to avoid the area after being beaten up (when walking through with a friend) for no other reason than the local gang didn't know me.

Next week there will be a rise in the amount of stabbings in Leicester. All the knitting needles - dangerous items.

I wonder where these people get their ideas to improve community life - they should ask the community what they themselves want.

It's clear from some of the comments quoted in the report that people have misunderstood/been misinformed about the purpose of this, which seems to be not to make the place safer but make it FEEL safer. The thinking presumably being for one thing to reduce fear, which isn't a very nice thing and can cause lots of problems in itself, and second maybe to encourage more law-abiding people onto the streets, which would be a positive thing.

The last time I saw an idea like this when trees were covered with dog's poo in their latex like scoops. Instead of taking it home with them dog owners were in competition to see how high up the tree they could aim.
